  • They were doing “Yagna” (Kind of spiritual duty) as their worship.
  • They were in a thought that doing this kind of Yagna is enough to attain the “Mukthi” and there is no need to worship Lord Shiva.
  • Because of this attitude they were not ready to worship Lord Shiva. They felt that, they were the superiors.
  • Lord Shiva wanted to teach a lesson to them. He came here as a Bhikshatanar which is the beautiful “Avathar” (one of the apperance) of Lord Sri Shiva.
  • People were so impressed with the beauty of Lord Shiva. Sri Vishnu also came here at the same time as a “Mohini” (one of the womanly apperance) of Lord Sri Vishnu.
  • The sages of “Tharukavana” were so impressed with the beauty of the Mohini. They forgot to preform the “Yagna”.
  • When the came to know that Lord Shiva appeared here to teach a lesson to them, they created an elephant (“Gaja Sura”) from the Yagna to destroy Lord Shiva.
  • Lord Shiva got into the elephant. Lord unwraped the skin of the elephent and wrapped on him. Hence the Lord here is called as “Kari Urittha Sivan”. The Tamil words “Kari” means elephent and “Urrithal” means unwrap. Ultimately God Shiva destroyed that Gaja(Elephant). Hence Lord shiva here called as “Gaja Samhara Moorthi”.
