  • This temple is situated in Thirunavalur of Vizhuppuram District., Tamil Nadu .
  • Thirunavalur is located in Thiruchirapalli – Chennai Highway route near Ulunthurpet.
  • From Ulunthurpet on has to reach Panruti – Thirukkovilur route to reach Thirunavalur.
  • The presiding deity is Lord Shiva called Bhakthajaneswarar with his consort Manonmami Ammai.
  • Thirunavalur is located around twelve Kilo Meters away from Panruti town and it is around two Kilo Meters away from Thirukkovilur.
  • Nearest Railway stations are Parikkal and Ulunthurpet .

Thirunavalur – Bhakthajaneswarar Temple History :

  • Thirunavalur also called as Thirunamanallur, Thirumunaipadi.
  • This temple is called as “Sukra Dhosha Parikara Sthalam” since Guru Sukrachariya installed a Linga and worshipped here to get the blessings of Bhagawan Sri Shiva.
  • Once Sri Sukrachariyar got a boon from Bhagawan Sri Shiva because of his penance. It was “Sri Sanjeevini Manthra” which could give back his life to a dead person.
  • Sri Sukracharyar used this manthra at the time of a battle between Devas (The Divine People) and Demons. Since Sri Sukrachariya, the Guru of Demons , used the Sanjeevini Manthra and gave life to demons who killed in the battle. Devas suffered a lot because of this.
  • When Bhagavan Sri Shiva came to know about the act of Sri Sukracharya , Sri Shiva got annoyed and cursed Sri Guru Sukracharya.
  • To get rid of from this curse Sri Guru Sukrachariya installed a Linga and worshipped in Thirunavalur temple. Bhagawan Sri Bhakthajaneswarar gave a dharshan to Sri Sukracharya and showered his blessings to the Guru.
  • Sri Thirugna Sambanthar , Sir Thirunavukkarasar (Appar) , Sri Sundarar and Sri Manikkavasagar are called as “Saiva Samaya Nalvar” (Poets and Devotees of Bhagawan Sri Shiva , praised him in their Hymns). Sri Manikkavasagar’s write-ups are called as “Thiruvasagam” whereas hymns of Sri Sambanthar, Sri Appar and Sri Sundarar are called as “Devaram”.
  • Thirunavalur is the “Avathara Sthalam” (Birth Place) of Sri Sundarar alias Sri Sundara Moorthi Nayanar. Sri Narasingha Munaiyarayar was ruling this province and he adopted Sri Sundarar as his son.
  • This Sthalam(“Temple”) is called as “Nayanmar Sthalam”.
  • This temple was build and preserved by the Kings of Chola dynasty.
  • This temple has a history of more than thousand years.

Significance of Thirunavalur – Bhakthajaneswarar Temple :

  • This temple is a East facing one with a five phase Rajagopuram (“Main Tower”).
  • Every year in the Tamil month Panguni on days 23 to 27 th(Five days), Sun rays fall on the Moolavar (“Presiding Deity”) Sri Bhakthajaneswarar . This event is called as “Surya Pooja”.
  • In the Moolasthanam (Karbhagirha) Sri Sandikeswara story can be seen as sculptures.
  • Sri Ganapathi, Sri Murugha with his consorts Sri Valli and Sri Deivanai are present in this temple. Saint and Poet Sri Arunagirinathar parised Bhagawan Sri Murugha in his “Thirupugazh” hymns. Hence this temple is called as “Thirupugazh Sthalam”.
  • Sri Natarajar with his consort Sri Sivagami is also present in this temple. A Nataraja sabha (“House”) is also there in this temple.
  • Sri Bhairavar, Sri Surya , Sri Sekkizhar, Nalvar (Saiva Samaya Nalvar), 63 Nayanmar, Sri Valampuri Vinayagar and Sri Gajalakshmi shrines are also present in this temple.
  • In the Navagraha shrine Bhagawan Sri Surya is present in the middle and facing the Moolavar Sri Bhakthajaneswarar. The Lingam which was installed and worshipped by Sri Guru Sukrachariya is also present near to the Navagraha shrine.
  • Fri days are considered as auspicious days here hence special poojas are being preformed to Sri Sukra Linga and to the main deity Sri Bhakthajaneswarar. Devotees pray to Sri Sukra Linga to get rid of from the “Sukra Dhosha”.
  • This temple is the “Devara Padal Petra Sthalam” means Sri Sundarar praised Sri Bhakthajaneswarar in his Devaram Hymns. There are 274 “Devara Padal Petra Sthalam” in total. Sri Sundarar praised as “Vanthondar” (Hard Core Devotee) by Bhagawan Sri Shiva.
  • Sri Sundarar with his consorts Sri Paravai Nachiyar and Sri Sangili Nachiyar present in this temple. Sri Sundarar “Jenma Thinam” (Birth day) is being celebrated here in a grand way. In Prathosham days also people gather in this temple and worship Sri Bhakthajaneswarar.
  • Since Jamun tree is the Thala Viruksham here, this temple is considered as auspicious to the people who born in the Rohini Nakshathira (Star).
  • This temple is a “Siva – Vishnu Alayam” since there is a Vishnu temple inside this temple. Bhagawan Sri Vishnu present in this temple with his consorts Sri Devi and Sri Poodevi. As the legend says Bhagawan Sri Vishnu worshiped and performed puja to Bhagavan Sri Shiva here , before his Narasimha Avathar.
  • Chant the following “Mirthunjeya Maha Manthra” to lead a healthy and long life :
    • “Miruthanjeya Mahabaaha Paramadeva Sadhasiva
    • Kalpayur Dehe Mea Poornam Yaavathayurarokatha
    • Baalambikesa Vaithyesa Bavaroga Herethisa
    • Jebenth Namathrayam Nithyam Maharoga Nivaaranam”
