  • This temple is situated in Uthiramerur of Kancheepuram District., Tamil Nadu .
  • Uthiramerur is located in Polur – Vanthavasi - Chennai route.

Uthiramerur - Kedareshwarar Temple History :

  • This temple is build by the Chola King Sri Kulothunga Chola II in the Fifteenth Century.
  • This temple was maintained and reverenced by the Kings from the Chola Dynasty and by the Kings of Vijayanagara Kingdom.
  • Sri Birungi Munivar (“Sage”) was a hardcore devotee of Bhagawan Sri Shiva. He was not ready to worship the other deities which includes “Ambal” Sri Paarvathi Devi also.
  • Whenever Sri Birungi Munivar visites Kailash to worship Sri Shiva, he used to worship Bhagawan Sri Shiva and aviods Sri Parvathi Devi.
  • Once when the sage visited to Kailash to worship Bhagawan Sri Shiva , Sri Parvathi Devi sat very close to Sri Shiva with the intention that the Sage could not avoid her.
  • Sri Birungi Munivar changed his figure as beetle and worshipped only Bhagawan Sri Shiva. Sri Parvathi Devi got annoyed and cursed the Sage, in the end Sri Birungi Munivar lost his legs because of the curse.
  • Sri Shiva helped his devotee Sri Birungi Munivar and gave back his legs. Then Sri Parvathi Devi performed her pooja called “Kethara Gowri Pooja”(Viratham).
  • Because of this pooja Sri Shiva was satisfied and gave his left portion of his body to Sri Paarvathi Devi. This image is called as “Sri Arthanareeswarar” which is the combination of both the deities Sri Shiva and Sri Parvathi devi. This form is also called as “Sivasakthi Roobam”.
  • The presiding deity of this temple is called as Sri Kethareeswarar and Sri Parvathi Devi is called as Sri Kethara Gowri.
  • This temple has a history of more than thousand years.

Significance of Uthiramerur - Kedareshwarar Temple :

  • This temple is the East facing one with a Rajagopuram (“Main Tower”).
  • The Presiding deity Sri Kethaareeswarar is present in a separate shire which is a East facing one.
  • Sri Kethaara Gowri alias Sri Maragathaambigai shower her blessings from a separate shrine which faces the South direction.
  • Bhagawan Sri Ganapathi and Sri Murugha are also present in this temple.
  • The significance is the “Kethara Gowri Pooja” is being performed in this temple on the Tamil month Aipasi no moon day (“Amavasya”) which is the Deepavali festival day.
  • This Pooja was performed by Sri Parvathi Devi herself for a boon from her consort Bhagawan Sri Shiva. This Kethara Gowri Pooja(“Viratham”) is considered as very powerful pooja and one of the eight Poojas (Ashta Pooja) that may be performed to Lord Sri Shiva.
  • On the Deepavali day women devotees perform this pooja to Lord Sri Shiva for their well being of their husband.
