  • This temple is situated in Tamil Nadu Cuddalore District. Thiruvathigai Village.
  • Thiruvathigai village is located around 23 Kilo Meters away from the district head quarters Cuddalore Town. This village Thiruvathigai is about 3 Kilo Meters away from Panruti town.
  • This place Thiruvathigai is well connected by road with the places like Trichy, Thiruvannamalai, Chennai, Panruti, Cuddalore and Vizhuppuram.

Thiruvathigai - Sri Veeratteswarar Temple History :

  • The demon King Tharakasura’s sons were demons Kamalaksha, Tharakaksha and Vidhuryurmali.
  • The Demon Tharakasura defeated and destroyed in a battle by Lord Sri Murugha..
  • The three demons Kamalaksha, Tharakaksha and Vidhuryurmali build three forts with Iron, Gold and Silver respectively. These forts were refered as “Thripuram” or “Muppuram”. These forts could fly also.
  • These demons move from one place to another with the help of these flying forts. They started disturbing Devas (“The divine beings of Vedic era”).
  • Devas seek the help of Lord Sri Shiva to save them from the demons. Lord Shiva got ready for a battle with the demons.
  • The three demons thought that they were so strong and they could defeat Lord Shri Shiva.
  • The earth was the chariot , the four vedhas were horses, The Sarathi (“Charioteer”) was Sri Bhramma, the mountain “Meru” was the bow. All these were ready for Lord Sri Shiva to battle with the demons.
  • Those things were not necessary to Lord Sri Shiva. Lord Shri Shiva just smiled at them. That smile was enough to burnt and destroy those demons.
  • These demons killed by Lord Sri Shiva in this place.
  • Sri Appar alias Sri Thirunavukkarasar, Sri Thirugnanasambanthar, Sri Sundaramoorthi Nayanar are considered as “Devara Moovar”. They are the devotees of Lord Sri Shiva and praised Sri Shiva with their hymns called “Devaram”.
  • This temple is closely associated with Sri Thirunavukkarasar and his sister Sri Thilagavathi.
  • Sri Thirunavukkarasar was following the “Jainism” for some time with the name “Dharumasena”.
  • Sri Thilagavathi with the blessings of this temple’s presiding deity Sri Veerateeswarar , brought him back to Hindu Dharma and this made him to wrote hymns on Lord shiva.

  • Sri Appar and his sister Sri Thilagavathiyar are in two separate shrines in this temple. The 63 Nayanmaar (“The firm devotees of Lord Sri Shiva”) statues are also present in this temple.

  • The Kings of Chera , Chola , Pandiya , Pallava, Chalukkiya, Nayakka dynasty contributed a lot for the development and maintenance of this temple during their ruling era.
  • In the month of “Vaikasi” visagam the festivel called “Thiripura Samharam” is being celebrated in this temple followed by a Car ( “Thear Thiruvizha”) festival.
