  • This temple is situated in Tamil Nadu Nagapattinam District. Thiruppariyalur Village..
  • Thirupariyalur village is located near Nalladai of Nagapattinam District. .
  • To reach Thirupariyalur village , in the Mayiladuthurai - Tharangambadi route reach to Semponnar Kovil town , from there travel to Nalladai route. On the way to Nalladai route within a small distance, in the right side there is sign board to reach Parasalur village.
  • The town Semponnar Kovil can be reached from rear by places like Karaikal and Thirukkadaiyur.
  • Nearest Railway station is Mayiladuthurai.

Thiruppariyalur - Sri Veeratteswarar Temple History :

  • This is the place where the Thaksha performed a Yagna (“A ritual sacrifice , worship and offer to the god”). This place was called as “Dhakshapuram”.
  • Once King Dhaksha the father of Goddess Parvathi (Dhakshayani), started a “Yagna” (ritual sacrifice with a specific objective) with the help of demons “Sura” and “Asura”.
  • While performing any “Yagna” the “Avir Bagam” (Prasad) has to be given to Lord Shiva as a supreme God . But Dhaksha wanted to insult Lord Shiva , he refused to contribute “Avir Bagam” and started his “yagna”.
  • Sri Dhakshayani wanted to establish her rights and advice to her father to give “Avir Bagam” to Lord Sri Shiva.
  • When Sri Dhakshayani enter into the place where Yagna was performed she was also insulted by her father King Dhaksha.
  • Hence Lord Shiva got annoyed and opened his third eye (Lord Shiva has an eye in the forehead). From that “Veerabathra Swamy” appeared with sparks. In this form he is refered as “ Sri Agni Veerabadhra”.
  • Lord Shiva ordered Sri Veerabadhra to destroy Dhaksha and his “Yagna”. Sri Veerabhdra took a ferocious form called as “Sri Agora Veerabadra Swamy” , destroyed the “Yegna” and killed Dhaksha by chopped his head.
  • When Dhaksha’s consorts worshipped Lord Shiva to save Dhaksha a Goat’s head was placed as head to Dhaksha. Lord Sri Shiva gave back a life to Dhaksha here.
  • In this temple Lord Sri Shiva called as “Sri Dhakshapureeswarar”.
  • The old name of this place in Chola’s era was “Rajanarayana Chathur Vethi Mangalamaana Pariyalur.
  • The present temple is build by Chola Kings.
  • King Dhasha’s boons were got back by Sri Shiva here hence this place is called as “Pariyalur”. The meaning of the Tamil word “Pari” is snatch.
  • This temple has a history of more than thousand years.

Significance of Thiruppariyalur - Sri Veeratteswarar Temple :

  • This temple is one of the “Atta Veerattana Sthalam(Place)”.

  • “Atta Veerattana Sthalam” are the eight places where Lord Shiva showed his courageous presentations.
  • All these are Lord Shiva temples.
  • It is the West facing temple. The Moolavar (“The Main Deity”) is the “Swayambu Moorthi” (Self Made).
  • The Godess Sri Ellangkombanaiyal is in a separate shrine which is a South facing one.
  • The presiding deity Sri Dakshapureeswarar praised by Sri Thirugnana Sambanthar in his Devaram hymns (“Devara Paadalgal”). Sri Thirugnana Sambanthar is one of the “Devara Moovar” (The core devotees of Lord Shiva who praised Lord Sri Shiva with their hymns). This is one of the “Paadal Petra Sthalam”. The total number of “Paadal Petra Sthalam” is 276.
  • The Navaghraha Sannithi is not present in this temple.
  • The God Sun prayed in this Sthalam to get back his authority also present in this temple in a “sannithi” (shrine).
  • Lord Sri Ganapathi is present in the name of “Sri Siddhi Vinayagar”, and Lord Sri Subramaniyar present in this temple. Lord Sri Subramaniyar praised by Sri Arunagirinathar in “Thirupugazh hymans”. In the “Nataraja Saba” the Natarajar also present.
  • Sri Bairavar is also a significant deity in this temple. Sri Bairavar with six hands shower his blessings to the devotees visit here. Ardhajama Pooja is being performed to Sri Bhiravar of this temple.
  • All the usual Pooja for Lord Sri Shiva are being performed in this temple. The “Aarudra Dharisanam”, Aadi Pooram and Navarathri days special Poojas are being performed to Sri Veeratteswarar.
  • People perform special Pooja to Sri Shiva on their 60 th , 70 th and 80 th Birth days to have good health and to lead a happy life.
  • People pray here for “Sahala Dhosha Nivarthi” and to get rid of from loan (” Kadan Nivarthi”) related issues.
  • Rudhra Homam and Rudhra Abishegam are being done for people who want to get good health , fearless mind and to good planetary effects.
