  • This temple is situated in Tamil Nadu Nagapattinam District., Thirukurukkai Village.
  • Thirukurukkai village is located in the Mayiladuthurai – Manalmedu route.
  • From Mayiladuthurai reach the village called Kondal , from there Thirukurukkai is around 3 Kilo Meters in distance.
  • The Thirukurukkai village is around 12 Kilo Meters from Mayiladuthurai town.
  • Nearest Railway station is Mayiladuthurai.

Thirukurukkai - Sri Veerattaneswarar Temple History :

  • At present Thirukurukkai is called as “Korukkai”
  • This place was called in other names like Yokesapuram, Thirukurukkai Veeratam, Kambakarapuram and Kamathaganapuram.
  • Once the sage “Sri Theerthavagu Munivar” wanted to perform Abishegam (A kind of ritual offer – Bathing the deities with divine materials like water, paste of sandal wood, Rose water etc) to Lord Sri Shiva of this temple.
  • He raised his hands and wanted to bring the Holy Ganga river for the purpose of performing Abishegam. But his hands were shrinked. The tamil word “Kurukuthal” means shrink . This is the reason why this place is called as “Kurukkai”.
  • The sage Sri Theerthavagu prayed Lord Shiva to get rid of from this deficiency. Lord shiva appeared before him and showerd his blessings to Sage Sri Theerthavagu Munivar.
  • Once Lord Shiva was in deep Penance. It has continued for years. Because of this the whole universe became hot.
  • The Demons also started troubling the Devas (The Divine People) and the common people also, because of the absence of Lord Sri Shiva.
  • Devas wanted to get rid of from the troubling of Demons. So they requested Lord Shri Murugha to drew the attention of Lord Sri Shiva. But Lord Murugha refused to do that.
  • Then Devas approached Sri Manmatha alias Sri Kaman for their help. Sri Manmatha accepted their request without thinking about the consequences of his act.
  • Sri Manmatha with his Bow and Arrow aimed at Sri Shiva. When Manmathan shot at Sri Shiva with his arrow, Sri Shiva got disturbed and saw Sri Manmatha with anger.
  • From the third eye (Lord Shiva has an eye on his forehead) sparks came out , Sri Manmathan got burnt in that spark.
  • Sri Manamathan’s consort Rathi Devi worshipped Lord Shiva to rescue her husband. Lord Sri Shiva gave a boon that Sri Manmathan will have a rebirth but he will be visible only to Rathi Devi.
  • There is a place called “Viboothi Kuttai (Pond)” nearby to this temple. It is strongly believed that Sri Shiva burnt Manmathan in that place. Till date the soil in the pond looking like Holy Ash (“Viboothi”).
  • There are so many places around this temple like Kankanam Puthur, Palakudi, Villiyur, Kavala Medu, Aivanallur and Mettu Korukkai are with the names as evidences of the legend.
  • The present temple build by the Chola dynasty.
  • This temple has a history of more than 2000 years.

Significance of Thirukurukkai - Sri Veerattaneswarar Temple :

  • This temple is one of the “Atta Veerattana Sthalam(Place)”.

  • All these are Lord Shiva temples.
  • This temple is the seventh of “Atta Veerattana Sthalam”. This is one of the “Devara Paadal Petra Sthalam”
  • The great Tamil Saints and Poets “Thirugnanasambathar, Thirunavukkarasar, Sundarar” are called as “Devara Moovar”. They visited various temples of Lord Sri Shiva and graced him with their Hymns. These temples are considered as “Devara Paadal Petra Sthalangal”.
  • This is the 26 th “Devara Paadal Petra Sthalam” in the northern side of river Kaveri. There are 276 Devara Thalangal.
  • Sri Thirunavukkarasar alias Sri Appar praised the Lord Sri Veeratteswarar of this temple in his Devaram Hymns.
  • The presiding deity (“Moolavar”) Sri Veerateeswarar is the “Swayambu Moorthi” (Self Made one).The “Kama Thaganam” festival is being performed in the Tamil month Masi , Magam star day in this temple.
  • Sri Ganapathi of this temple is called as “Kurukkai Ganapathi” who is considered as the Thala (Place) Vinayagar here.
  • Sri Natarajar is in a sabha (Court) with his consort Sri Sivagami Thayar. This Sabha is called as “Sambhu Vinotha Sabha”. Saint and great Tamil poet Sri Manikkavasagar is also present in this Sabha.
  • The great Tamil Poet “Mahavidhvan Sri Meenatchi Sundaram” wrote a detailed history (Thala Puram) about the temple.
  • The deities Sri Bhramma, Sri Thirumal, Sri Murugha , Sri Rathi Devi and Sri Mahalakshmi worshipped the presiding deity of this temple Sri Veeratteswarar.
  • Sri Shiva is in another form in this temple called as “Kama Samhara Moorthi”. He is in the sitting posture.

  • People also pray in this temple for child boon and timely marriage.
  • For timely marriage prople of garland (“Kalyana Maalai”) to Sri Veeratteswarar. A special Yagna called “Puthra Kameshti Yagam” is being performed in this temple for Child boon. Devotees celebrate and perform special pooja to the presiding deity on the occation of their 70 Birth day (“Beema Ratha Shanthi”) in this temple.
