About Kshethrabalapuram - Sri Anantha Kala Bairava Swamy Temple :

  • This temple is situated in Tamil Nadu Nagapattinam District.
  • This temple is located in the village Kshethrabalapuram of the Kutthalam Taluk, near Mayiladuthurai.
  • This temple is situated in the Mayiladuthurai – Kumbakonam route. From Mayiladuthurai this temple is in a distance of around nine KM and it is 30 KM away from Kumbakonam.
  • Mayiladuthurai town can be reached from nearby towns like Karaikal , Sirkazhi , Thirukkadaiyur and Tharangambadi.

Kshethrabalapuram - Sri Anantha Kala Bairava Swamy Temple :

  • The old writeup “Abithana Chinthamani” narrates about the birth of Sri Kala Bairava Swamy.
  • Lord Sri Bairava Swamy created by Lord Shiva himself to destroy the demon king “Dharakasura”.
  • There are several forms of Sri Bairavar like Swarnakarshana Bairavar, Yoga Bairavar, Aadhi Bairavar, Kala Bairavar, Ukkra Bairavar, to name few and it is said that, sixty four different forms of Sri Bairava Swamy are there.
  • Sri Kala Bairava Swamy is the divine protector of Kasi (Banaras).
  • In intial existence Sri Bhramma was also having five heads as like Lord Sri Shiva. Hence Sri Bhramma was in a thinking that he was the superior god.
  • Sri Bhramma out of arrogance started insulting Lord Shiva. Lord Sri Shiva got irritated because of the behaviour of Sri Bhramma.
  • Sri Shiva called Sri Kala Bairava Swamy and gave the command to punish Sri Bhramma for his attitude. Sri Kala Bairava Swamy removed one of the heads of Sri Bhramma as a punishment.
  • Hence Sri Kala Bairava got affected by “Bhrammahatti Dosha”. That head removed from Sri Bhramma got stuck in Sri Kala Bairava’s hand. Because of this Sri Kala Bairavar lost his happiness.
  • He worshipped Lord Shiva to get rid of from the “Bhrammahatti Dosha” and to get back the mental peacefulness.
  • Lord Shiva directed Sri Kala Bairava to worship in various Shiva temples. Sri Shiva also told that when Sri Kala Bairavar worship in one of the temples, will get rid of from the “Bhrammahatti Dosha”.
  • As per the suggestion of Lord Shiva , Sri Kala Bairavar visited and worshipped various Shiva temples at Banaras, Kancheepuram, Seerkazhi , Chidambaram, Thiruvenkadu and Thiruvaiyaru for a long time.
  • When he was worshipping Sri Swetha Vinayagar of Kabartheeswarar temple at “Thiruvalanchuzhi”, Sri Kala Bairava’s “Bhrammahatti Dosha” retracted and he got back his pleasure (“Anandam”).
  • Hence he is called as “Sri Ananda Kala Bairavar”. Sri Swetha Vinayagar asked Sri Ananda Kala Bairavar to go to “Kshethrabalapuram” and reside there.
  • The Thiruvalanchuzhi temple’s main deity is Lord Sri Shiva but Sri Swetha Vinayagar of this temple is also a significant deity who has a separate shrine inside the temple.
  • Sri Swetha Vinayagar is white in colour and made of sea water foam. Thus Sri Ananda Kala Bairavar shower his blessings to the devotess in the Kshethrabalapuram temple as the main deity (“Moolavar”).
  • It is the oldest place (“Sthalam”) and the era is not known.

Significance of Kshethrabalapuram - Sri Anantha Kala Bairava Swamy Temple :

  • This Sri Ananda Kala Bairavar temple is equivalent to the Sri Kala Bairava temple at Kasi( Banaras).
  • The book (“krantham”) named “Vishnu Dharmothram” says about the appearance of “Sri Kala Bairava Swamy”.
  • Since Sri Kala Bairava Swamy created to destroy the demon “Dharakasura”, his appearance always in the form of ferocious (”Routhram”) in all the temples.
  • But here Sri Ananda Bairavar is in the form of standing posture with a joyful face.Another significance is Sri Ananda Kala Bairavar appears here without his vahana dog.
  • Sri Bairavar usually available in the Northeast corner of all Sri Shiva temples as a guarding deity.
  • Here in this temple Sri Ananda Kala Bairavar is the main deity. He is also referred in the name “Kshethrabalar” . Hence this place is called as “Kshethrabalapuram”.
  • There are separate shrines for Sri Vinayaga Moorthi, Sri Murugan , Sri Ayyappan (Sri Sastha) and Sri Selli Amman.
  • Since Sri Kala Bairavar is considered as the Guru of Sri Saneeswara , devotees worship here to get rid of the malefic effect of planet Sri Saneeswara.
  • People pray here to get rid of from issues created by black magic, evil eye and witch craft also.
  • All Sundays, eighth day after the full moon day (“Theipirai Ashtami”), Eighth day after the no moon day (“Valar Pirai Ashtami”) are significant days in this temple. Special poojas are being performed in this temple to Sri Ananda Kala Bairavar and all the other deities here.
  • Devotees visit and worship Sri Ananda Kala Bairavar on these day here. People pray here for child boon , well-timed marrriage and overcome from bad planet effects of their birth chart.
  • The Tamil Month Chithrai’s full moon day (“Chithra Pournami”) and Kirithigai month’s last Sunday are also important days here. Special poojas are being performed on these days too.
