  • This temple is situated in Tamil Nadu Thirunelveli District. Kari Soozntha Mangalam village.
  • Kari Soozntha Mangalam village is located around 30 Kilo Meters away from Thirunelveli Town.
  • This temple can be reached from Thirunelveli, by travelling via Pathamadai which is 3 Kilo Meters away from this place “Kari Soozhntha Mangalam”.
  • Nearest Railway station is Cheranmadevi.

Karisuzhuntha - Mangalam Natarajar Temple History :

  • As the legend says the King Ramapandiyan was ruling this province. He was a great devotee of Sri Nellaiyappar of Thirunelveli temple. He used to take food only after the dharshan of Sri Nellaiyappar and Sri Gandhimathi Ammai.
  • One day Sri Nelliyappar appeared in the dream of the King, ordered to build a temple to him at the place Chepparai.
  • The king constructed a temple at Cheppari for the deities Sri Nellaiyappar and Sri Gandhimathi ammai. With the blessings of Lord Shiva , Sri Natarajar’s idol brought by a sculptor from Chidambaram to Cheppari.
  • Sri Natarajar’s idol installed in the Chepparai temple by the King Ramapandian.
  • King Ramapandian’s relative King Veerapandian was ruling the nearby province Kattarimangalam.
  • Impressed by the attractiveness of Lord Sri Nataraja at Cheppari temple, King veerapandian wanted to build a temple at Kattarimangalam for Sri Nataraja.
  • He requested the King Ramapandian that he need an identical idol of Sri Nataraja at Chepparai for the temple he wanted to build for “Sri Nataraja” at Kattari Mangalam.
  • King Ramapandian accepted the request of King Veerapandian called up and ordered the Sculptor Sri Namachivaya Muthu to make two Natarajar’s idol , one for the Kattarimangalam temple and one for Sri Nellaiyappar temple at Thirunelveli.
  • It is strongly believed that the sculptor Sri Namachivaya Muthu who made the idols of Sri Natarajar installed at Chidambaram and Chepparai temples.
  • As per the order of King Ramapandian the Sculptor made two more identical Natarajar idols.
  • Out of those two Nataraja’s idols , one was installed at the Kattarimangalam temple at Thoothukkudi district now.
  • Another idol of Sri Natarajar installed in this “Kari Soozntha Mangalam” temple build by Sri Ramapandian, as desired by Lord Sri Nataraja.
  • The present temple at Kari Soozntha Mangalam reconstructed by King Maravarma Sundara Pandian in later days.
  • The latest “Kumbabishegam” performed in the year 2002. This temple has a history of about 1000 years.

Significance of Karisuzhuntha - Mangalam Natarajar Temple :

  • This temple is one of the “Pancha Nataraja Shethram”.

    • 4. Mela Karuvelan Kulam
    • 5. Kattarimangalam at Thoothukkudi District.
  • The Nataraja’s idol in these temples are identical in shape and it is believed that all five Sri Nataraja’s idols were sculpted by the same sculptor named Sri Namachiva Muthu .
  • The presiding deity Sri Sundareswarar is in the “Moolasthanam” . Sri Nataraja of this temple is also as significat as the presiding deity Sri Sundareswarar. Sri Nataraja is in the dancing posture in a separate shrine, called as “Kanagasabapathi” which is the name of the temple itself now.
  • The Goddess (“Thayar”) Sri Sundarambigai is in a separate shrine at this temple.
  • Sri Vinayagar , Sri Dhakshinamoorthi and Navagraha shrines, Lord Sri Muruga with his consorts Sri Valli and Sri Deivanai are also there in a separate shrine in this temple.
  • Saints Sri Pathanjali and Sri Viyakrabathar statues are also present in this temple which express the legend connection of Sri Natarajar of this temple.
  • People pray in this temple for child boon , timely marriage and development in business and their profession.
  • This temple is being surrounded by greenery because of the river Thamirabarani and this temple is located in the south side bank of Thamirabarani river.
  • Thiruvathirai star day, Navarathiri, Shashti , Kiruthigai star days are significant days in this temple. Special poojas and Abishegam are being performed to deities lord Sri Sudareswarar and Sri Kanagasabapathi (Sri Nataraja) of this temple.
  • Prathosham days are being celebrated in a grand way in this temple.
