About Idagunji - Ganesha Temple :

  • The temple is in the village of Idagunji, which is about 15 kms. from Honnavar, a town in Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka state, on the west coast of India.
  • The prime deity of the temple is Lord Ganesha.
  • The temple is part of a group of six Ganesha temples – Kasargod, Mangalore, Anegudde, Kundapura, Idagunji, and Gokarna - along the west coast of India. If a person with her/his family covers these six temples in one day between sunrise and sunset, then the person and her/his family is bestowed with special blessings.

Idagunji - Ganesha Temple History :

  • It is estimated that the temple is more than 1500 years old.
  • As per Hindu mythology, towards the end of the Dwapara Yuga, the sage Valakhilya and other saints faced obstacles while performing austerities to eliminate Doshas in the oncoming Kali Yuga.
  • With the help of sage Narada, these saints reached Kunjaranya, where they propitiated to Lord Ganesha to remove all the obstacles to their austerities.
  • Pleased with their devotion, the Lord stayed at Kunjaranya, which is now called as Idagunji to grant the wishes of his devotees.

Significance of Idagunji - Ganesha Temple :

  • The idol of Lord Ganesha is in dvibhuja style, with two arms, the right hand holding a lotus bud, and the left hand holding modak sweet, and standing on a stone slab.
  • The Lord wears a garland across his chest like a sacred thread. He also has a necklace of bells. The Rat, the vahana of the Lord, is not present.
  • The temple prepares a special prasadam named as Panchakhadya.
  • An estimated 10 lakh devotees visit the temple in a year.
  • The temple is a part of a circuit of six Ganesha temples, which if visited between sunrise and sunset of a single day, bestows special blessings to the devotee.
