  • This temple is situated in Semmangudi , Sirkazhi Taluk of Nagapattinam District., Tamil Nadu .
  • The village Semmangudi is situated in Sirkazhi – Thirumullaivasal direction.
  • The village Semmangudi is located around 5 Kilo Meters away from Sirkazhi town and it is around 70 Kilo Meters away from Nagapattinam.
  • The nearby temple towns are Chidambaram, Mayiladuthurai , Thiru Naangur , Vaitheeswaran Kovil and Thiruvenkadu.
  • Nearest Railway station is Sirkazhi.

Sirkazhi - Semmangudi - Kedheeswarar Temple History :

  • This place was called as “Kethupuram”.
  • Once there was a battle between “Devas” (The Divine People) and “Rakshas” (Demons) to get the Nectar (“Amirtha”) got by churn the “Parkadal” (Ocean of Milk) where Bhagawan Sri Vishnu resides.
  • Bhagawan Sri Vishnu took the form of Mohini Avathar to divert Demons and started the distribution of nectar to Devas.
  • One Demon called “Swarnabhanu” suspected that Demons may not get nectar, took a form of Deva. He got into the crowed of Deva and ultimately got the Nectar from Mohini and ate it.
  • Sri Surya Bhagawan and Sri Chandra Bhagawan came to know this and informed it to Sri Vishnu Bhagawan.
  • Sri Vishnu Bhagawan got annoyed and strike on the head of Swarnabhanu with the ladle. The body of the “Swarnabhanu” divided into two parts, one from head to chest and another part was chest to leg. Since Swanrnabhanu ate the Nectar (“Amirtha”) , both the parts were alive.
  • As per the legend the head to chest part called Raghu fell on the place called “Sirapuram” near Sirkazhi and another part chest to leg called Kethu fell on this place “Semmangudi”.
  • Both Raghu and Kethu with their penance towards Sri Maha Vishnu, got the planetary positions in the “Navaghraha”. Raghu and Kethu move from on house to another house in the anti clock wise direction while all the other planets move in the clock wise direction.
  • The name of the place Semmangudi derived from the old name of this place “Sem Paambin Gudi” means place of a Red Snake. Sri Kethu Bhagawan has the body of a snake. This Sri Kethu Bhagawan is called as “Sri Aadhi Yoga Kethu Bhagawan” here.
  • This temple has a history of more than thousand years.

Significance of Sirkazhi - Semmangudi - Kedheeswarar Temple :

  • This temple is the East facing temple. The main deity of this temple Sri Naganathar’s shrine is also a East facing one.
  • Goddess Sri Thiripurasundari is situated in a separate East facing shrine.
  • The great Tamil Saints and Poets “Thirugnanasambathar, Thirunavukkarasar, Sundarar” are called as “Devara Moovar”, visited various temples of Lord Sri Shiva and graced him with their Hymns.
  • These temples are considered as “Devara Paadal Petra Sthalangal”.
  • The “Vaippu Thalangal” are the temples are not having any dedicated hymns. But there are many Shiva temples mentioned in the hymns about other Shiva temples. These are considered as “Devara Vaippu Thalangal”.
  • Sri Thirunavukkarasar alias Sri Appar mentioned and praised Sri Jambukaranyeaswarar in his Devaram Hymns when he was praising Bhagawan Sri Shiva of nearby “Paadal Petra Sthalam” temples.
  • In vedic astrology, in a birth chart of a person, Sri Kethu Bhagawan’s and Sri Raghu Bhagawan’s certain positions are considered as Dhosha. Those are called as “Naga Dhosha” , “Kala Sarbha Dhosha”. This temple is the “Parakara Sthalam” for these kind of Dhosha.
  • People have these Dhosha in their birth chart pray to the main deity Sri Naganathar and Sri Aadhi Yoga Kethu Bhagawan to get rid of from their Dhosha. “Sri Aadhi yoga Kethu” Bhagawan housed in a separate “Sannithi” (Shrine).
  • Bhagawan Sri Shiva in a Linga form called “Kadan Nivarthi Lingam” in a separate shrine in this temple which is small in size. People pray to this deity to overcome from their “Kadan” (debt) related issues.
  • The main deity Sri Kedheeswarar worshipped by Sri Maha Vishnu, Sri Nala Chakravarthi and Sri Kethu Bhagawan.
  • The “Kethu Kala Pooja” performed in this temple in Sun days 12.00 to 1.30 in the noontime. People gather here and perform pooja to Sri Yoga Kethu Bhagawan to get rid of from “Sarpa Dhosha”.
  • Sri Vinayagar, Sri Murugha with his consorts Sri Valli and Sri Deivanai, Sri Dhakshina Moorthi , Goddess Sri Dhurgha Devi also present in this temple.
  • Sri Maha Vishnu is in a separate shrine. Sri Hanuman and Goddess Sri Vishnu Dhurgha are also shower their blessings to the devotees who pray here.
  • Chant the following Sri Kethu Bhagawan Gayathri Manthra to get the blessings of Sri Kethu Bhagawan:
    • “Achva Thvajaaya Vidhyamahe
    • Soola Hasthaaya Theemahi
    • Thanno Kethu Prachothayathu”
