  • This temple is situated in Koonthaloor , Kudavasal Taluk of Thiruvarur District., Tamil Nadu .
  • Koonathloor is located in Kumbakonam – Poonthottam route near Eravancheery.
  • From the place Poonthottam this temple is located around 12 KM.
  • The village Koonthaloor is located around 15 KM away from Kumbakonam town and it is around 30 KM away from the District Headquarters Thiruvarur.
  • Nearest Railway station is Kumbakonam.

Koonthalur - Jambukaranyeswarar Temple History :

  • Sri Roma Maharishi, disciple of Sri Agathiya Maharishi worshipped in this temple. Sri Roma Maharishi as per the instruction of his Guru Sri Agasthiya Maharishi created “Nava Kailash” on the southern side of the river Thaamirabarani.
  • After the “Nava Kailash” construction Sri Roma Maharishi worshipped in various Shiva temples. Sri Roma Maharishi worshipped Sri Jamubukaranyeaswarar here. Sri Roma Maharashi’s shrine is present in the South side (“Prakaram”) of this temple.
  • Once upon a time this place was surrounded by Naval (Jamun) Trees , hence Bhagawan Sri Shiva is called as “Jambukaranyeswarar”.
  • A Maharishi worshipped the presiding deity Sri Jambukaranyeaswarar of this temple, with a form of a Fox and got “Mukthi” (Attain the holy feet of Sri Shiva).
  • Though this temple is a “Sivalayam” (Temple for Bhagawan Sri Shiva) people of this region call this temple as “Koonthaloor Murugan Kovil” (Temple). This temple is located on the bank of River “Arasalaru”.
  • This temple’s legend is releted to Sri Ramayana. It is believed that Sri Seetha Devi took bath in the “Seetha Theertham” worshipped in this place.
  • The Kings from the Chola Dynasty contributed a lot for this temple. The present temple was partronized by the kings of “Vijayanagara Kingdom”.
  • This temple has a history of more than thousand years.

Significance of Koonthalur - Jambukaranyeswarar Temple :

  • The great Tamil Saints and Poets “Thirugnanasambathar, Thirunavukkarasar, Sundarar” are called as “Devara Moovar”. They visited various temples of Lord Sri Shiva and graced him with their Hymns. These temples are considered as “Devara Paadal Petra Sthalangal”.
  • The “Vaippu Thalangal” are the temples are not having any dedicated hymns. There are many Shiva temples mentioned in the hymns about other Shiva temples. These are considered as “Devara Vaippu Thalangal”.
  • Sri Thirunavukkarasar alias Sri Appar mentioned and praised Sri Jambukaranyeaswarar in his Devaram Hymns when he was praising Bhagawan Sri Shiva of nearby “Paadal Petra Sthalam” temples.
  • Bhagawan Sri Murugha is with a single face and four hands called in this temple as “Sri Kumaragurabarar”. He is present in this temple with his consorts Sri Valli and Sri Deivayanai. This is also called as a “Thirupugazh Sthalam” , Sri Arunagiri Nathar praised Sri Murugha of this temple in his “Thirupugazh” Hymns . The Peacock sculpture in this shrine is considered as a significant one since its head turned in the right side of it.
  • In the opposite side of the “Sri Kumaragurabarar” Shrine Sri Sani Bhagawan shrine is there. Bhagawan Sri Murugha is the lord for Sri Sevvai Bhagawan(“Planet Mars”). This kind of arrangement is considered as a significant one in this temple.
  • Sri Sani Bhagawan is also called as “Sri Shathru Samhara Sani Bhagawan”. People pry to this Sri Sani Bhagawan to get rid of from known and unknown enemies.
  • In vedic astrology, in a birth chart of person Sri Sani Bhagawan (“Planet Saturn”) Sri Sevvai Bhagawan (“Planet Mars”) are in the same house or placed in the 7 th House of one another will see each other (“Sama Sapthama Paarvai”) , are considered as Dhosha. This temple is the “Parakara Sthalam” for these kind of Dhosha.
  • People pray and perform pooja to get rid of from Sani Dhosha and Sevvai Dhosha. Navagraha are not present in this temple. A rare kind of Linga called “Thaara Linga” which belongs to Pallava era is also present in a shrine in the “Prakara”.
  • People offer oil to Sri Roma Maharishi and that oil applied on Sri Roma Maharishi then distributed to the devotees. People apply this oil on their body to get rid of from skin related dieases.
  • Sri Ganapathi , Sri Balasubramaniyar, Sri Narayana Perumal , Sri Mahalakshmi, Sri Dhurga Devi, Sri Appar , Sri Manikkavasagar, Sri Sambanthar, Sri Chandikeswarar also present and shower their blessings to devotees in this temple as “Parivara Devathas”(Deities).
