Tiruverumbur - Erumbeeswarar Temple History :

  • The Demon Tharukasura got lot of boons from Sri Bhramma. With those boons Demon Thrukasura became so arrogant and started troubling all people which includes Devas (“The Divine People”) also.
  • Sri Indhra along with Deva (The Divine People) worshipped Bhagawan Sri Shiva in the form of ants to get rid of from the disturbances of the Demon Tharukasura.
  • They hide their identity and took the form Ants to hide their identity , worshipped Bhagawan Sri Shiva in this temple, as per the advice of Sri Bhramma.
  • As per another legend, Thirisira’s brother Karan worshipped Sri Shiva of this temple in the form of Ant and attain “Mukthi” (reached Bhagawan’s holy feet).
  • This is the reason why the presiding deity Sri Shiva is called as “Sri Erumbeesar” (God of Ants).
  • In old days this place was called in so many names like Manikoodam, Erumbeesam, Kumarapuram, Bhrammapuram, Lakshmipuram, Rathnakoodam, Mathuvanapuram and Pipleeswaram.
  • Kings from the Chola dynasty, contributed a lot for the development of this temple.
  • Adithya Chola the I , Kandaradithya Chloa consort of Chembian Madevi also contributed a lot for this temple.Kandaradithya Chloa was the grand father of the great Chola king Sri Rajaraja Chola the I. Sri Rajarajan’s Sri Rajendra Chola also contributed a lot as patronage to this temple during his ruling period.
  • This temple has a history of more than thousand years.

Significance of Tiruverumbur - Erumbeeswarar Temple :

  • It is East facing temple located on the top of a small mount fully constructed out of granite, dedicated to Bhagawan Sri Shiva.
  • This temple is called as “Malai Kovil” by the people of this region since this temple is located on a small mountain. There are one hundred and twenty five steps to reach this temple.
  • Bhagavan Sri Shiva present in this in the form of Linga. The Linga’s top portion is slightly in a tilting position. It is said that , the Linga is in a tilting position to help the Deva who worshipped in the form of Ants.
  • In the backside (“Prakaram”) of the Karbhagraha one could see either Sri Vishnu’s image or Sri Annamalaiyar’s image. In this temple the presence of a statue called as “Sri Sankara Narayana” which is the combination of both the deities Bhagavan Sri Shiva and Bhagavan Sri Narayanar is so significant.
  • Deities Sri Yoganarasimhar, Sri Narthana Ganapathi, Sri Haraihara, Sri Dhakshinamoorthi , Sri Bhramma and Sri Durga Devi are also present and shower their blessings to the devotees.
  • Surya (“Sun”) , Sri Bhairava, Sri Murugha , Sri Natarajar , Sri Gajalakshmi and Saptha Kanniyar (“The seven Virigins”) are also present in their respective shrines in this temple.
  • This temple is the “Devara Paadal Petra Sthalam” means Sri Thirunavukkarasar praised Bhagavan “Sri Erumbeesar” in his Devaram Humns. Sri Thirunavukkarasar sung two Devaram Hymns especially dedicated to Sri Erumbeesar of this temple.
  • Another “Devara Paadal Petra Sthalam” Thirunedungalm temple is also located around 10 Kilo Meters from this temple.
  • Sri Thirinavukkarasar is one of the Devara Moovar(“Trio”) who were saints and praised Bhagavan Sri Shiva in their Devaram Hymns.
  • Prathosham days are so significant in this temple and special pujas are being performed to Sri Erumbeesar. In the tamil month Vaikasi , Visagam a ten days festival is being celebrated in this temple.
  • People pray to Bhagavan Sri Erumbeesar of this temple with a strong belief to get IT related Jobs and Excel in Higher Education.
  • There is a big lake in the Northern side of this temple is also considered as the “Thala Theertham” of this temple. There is a small Pond (“Thirukkulam”) in the southern side of the main entrance of this temple.
