  • Sri Jayan and Sri Vijayan are protecting deities (“Dwara Balagas”) of Lord Sri Vishnu.
  • Once Lord Sri Vishnu was at the abode in the heaven (“Devaloga”) with his consort Sri Maha Lakshmi. At that time some sages came and wanted to meet Sri Vishnu.
  • The Dwara Balagas stopped Sages at the entrance and not allowed them to get in. Because of this sages got angry and cursed Jaya and Vijaya.
  • Due to the curse they were born as Demons in the earth (“Boologa”) with the name Iranyatchan and Iranyakasibu.
  • Demon Iranyatchan killed by Lord Vishnu in his Varaha Avatharam(“God takes a human or animal form for the benefit of the devotees”).
  • Because of this Iranyakasibu got annoyed and started doing penance for several years, to get some boon to make himself stronger. Ultimately he got a boon that , he could not be killed by a human or animal, a man or woman , a weapon , in the day or night and so on .
  • After this he was so cruel and started distrubing the people, sages and saints. He started to insist, people to worship him.
  • But his young son Pragalad refused to accept him as a god. Pragalad was the devotee of Sri Vishnu and always chant the manthra “Om Namo Narayanaya”.
  • The irritated demon Inranyakashibu started to trouble even his son Pragalad also.
  • To save Pragalad , Lord Sri Vishnu took a ferocious avathar called “Sri Narasimha” and killed Iranyakashibu. This Sri Narashmha Avathar is the fourth one of his ten Avathars.
  • Because of this elimination of Iranyakashibu, Sri Vishnu got affected by a Bhrammahatthi Dhosha. Sri Vishnu worshiped Sri Aatkondanathar of this temple to overcome from the effect of the Dhosha.
  • Sri Shiva appeared and blessed Sri Vishnu, hence Lord Shiva of this temple is called as Aatkonda Nathar.
