The presiding deity is Lord Shiva called Immayilum Nanmai Tharuvar with his consort Naduvoor Nayaki.

In this temple devotees have darshan of rear side of Shivalinga.
Lord Shiva himself with Parvathi perform puja to Linga inside the sanctum.
Before Taking charge as Pandya King at Madurai, Lord Shiva performed the customary Linga Puja here in this temple.
It is believed that performing Raja Upachara Puja here in this temple helps devotees in getting top executive/ political level posts.
The Sri Chakra of Abmal temple is carved in stone instead of usual Copper plate.
This temple is representing Pruthvi (Earth) of Five elements Pancha Poothas).
The Sandikeswara of this temple is called Recommending Sandikeswara, as it is believed he reminds God of wishes of devotees.

The puja will be performed on the scheduled date either in the morning or in the evening as per the head priest's sole discretion based on other festivals and programs conducted in the temple.
