  • This Temple is situated in Tamil Nadu Nagapattinam District. In the heart of the town Nagapattinam.
  • This temple is located in the heart of the town Nagapattinam. This temple is in Neela South street, near to Neelayathatchi amman kovil.
  • Nagapattinam town can be reached from the nearby towns like Mayiladuthurai , Thiruvarur.

Nagapattinam - Sri Kumaran Temple History :

  • The main deity of this temple is Sri Muruga called here in the name of “Meikanda Moorthi”.
  • During the ruling era of king Megarajan , this temple was well maintained by his general public.
  • The King Megarajan also contributed a lot for the welfare of this temple. After his ruling period , the successors were not keen in safeguarding that temple. After some years, without proper maintenance this temple buried in the soil.
  • After so many years, Sri Murugha revealed his location and identity to one Sri Anandarangam Pillai’s dream. Sri Anandarangam Pillai then serving as a “Dubashi” in the French administration of Puducherry. He was a successful trader also.
  • With the blessings of Sri Meikandamoorthi, Anandarangam Pillai came to Nagapattinam and identified Lord Sri Muruga’s and other deities statues. Hence the temple build here.
  • One devotee Azagumuthu was functioning in this temple as a security person. Since he was affected by a skin disease (leprosy) he lost his employment. Though he was struggling with poverty and his disease related issues, he continued as a strong disciple of Sri Meikanda Moorthi of this temple. He used to visit the temple, without the knowledge of others and worship Sri Meikanda Moorthi.
  • One day in the evening when he was inside the temple the workers closed the temple. Azagumuthu trapped inside the temple. Because of fear and hunger he started weeping and prayed for his release to God Meikanda Moorthi.
  • Sri Meikanda Moorthi appeared in front of Azagumuthu and showered his blessings. Azhgumuthu got a relief from his skin ailment after the dharshan of Sri Muruga. He wrote lot of poems praising Lord Sri Muruga.
  • This temple is about 500 years old one.

Significance of Nagapattinam - Sri Kumaran Temple :

  • It is common that a peacock statue can be seen in front of Lord Sri Muruga’s shrines. But here at Sri Kumaran Koil, a rare thing is that, an elephent is being installed in front of Sri Meikanda Moorthi’s shrine.
  • Sri Murugha married Sri Devendhra’s daughter Deivanai. As a gift, Sri Indhra gave his piety white elephent Iravadham to Sri Murugha. It is believed that this is the reason why an elephent idol is seen in front of Sri Meikanda Moorthi in this temple.
  • Sri Kubera worshipped here Sri Meikanda Moorthi. In a separate shrine Sri Kubera is in this temple. People who need financial improvements worship in this temple.
  • It is strongly believed that one with a skin problem, will get rid of from the sickness with the blessings of Sri Meikanda Moorthi of this temple.
  • Festivels like Kandha Shasti, Navarathiri, Vaikasi Visagam, Thai Poosam are being celebrated in this temple with the immense support of Devotees.
  • In Deepavali festivel day the Kubera Pooja is also beeing performed in this temple.
  • The great Saint Sri Arunagirinathar praised the Lord of this Temple , in his “Thirupugazh”.
  • There are separate shrines for “Sri Ganapathi”, Goddess “Durga Devi”, Lord “Sri Viswanathar”, Goddess “Visalakshi” in this temple.
