About Manakkal Aiyampet Abhi Muktheeswarar Temple :

• This temple is situated in Manakkal Aiyampettai (Peruvelur) of Thiruvarur District., Tamil Nadu .
• Thiru Peruvelur alias Kattur Aiyampet is located in Kumbakonam – Thiruvarur route near Manakkal.
• From the village Manakkal this temple is located around one Kilo Meter.
• Peruvelur is located around 30 Kilo Meters away from Kumbakonam town and it is around 10 Kilo Meters away from Thiruvarur.
• Nearest Railway station is Thiruvarur.

Manakkal Aiyampet Abhi Muktheeswarar Temple History :

• It was the place where a person called “Peruvel” lived, hence it is called as “Peruvelur”. Bhagawan Sri Murugha worshipped Bhagawan Sri Shiva in this temple. This is also a reason that this place is called as “Peruvellur” and the name of “Theertham” also in the name of Bhagawan Sri Murugha, as “Saravana Poigai”.
• As the legend says Bhagawan Sri Vishnu worshipped Bhagawan Sri Shiva in this place when he was in his “Mohini Avathar”. After the worship and Pooja Bhagawan Sri Vishnu got back his original masculine appearance.
• This temple is a “Mada Kovil”. It was built by the Chola king “Kochenkat Cholan”. There are near about 78 Maadakovil (Temple) were built by Kochenkat Cholan. Maada Kovil is a Temple, has a kind of architecture in which an elephant can not enter into the Temple.
• It is believed that Kochenkat Chola was a Spider in his previous birth. Everey time that spider builds its spiderweb , an elephent used to destroy that web. Because of the action of that elephent , the spider suffered a lot.
• Due to the “Good Karma” of the Spider, got his next birth as a King (“Kochenkat Chola”). With his pervious birth’s (“Poorva Janma”) thoughts , King Kochenkat Chola build temples in such a way that the elephents could not enter into those temples.
• This temple has a history of more than thousand years.

Significance of Manakkal Aiyampet Abhi Muktheeswarar Temple :

• This temple is with a three staged Rajagopuram (“Main Tower”). Sri Abimuktheeswarar shrine is facing the East direction as the temple is also facing the Eastern direction. Sri Abimuktheeswarar is in a Linga form which is “Swayambu Moorthi” ( A naturally made one).
• Goddess Sri Elavarkuzhali shrine is also facing the Eastern direction and Ambal is in a sitting posture on a Peedam. This is one of the significance of this temple since Sri Ambal could be seen in a sitting postrue in few temples only.
• Sri Gouthama Magarishi (“Sage”) and Sri Brungi Maharishi worshipped Bhagawan Sri shiva in this Sthalam (“Place”).
• Sri Thirugna Sambanthar , Sir Thirunavukkarasar (Appar) , Sri Sundarar and Sri Manikkavasagar are called as “Saiva Samaya Nalvar” (Poets and Devotees of Bhagawan Sri Shiva , praised him in their Hymns). Sri Manikkavasagar’s write-ups are called as “Thiruvasagam” whereas hymns of Sri Sambanthar, Sri Appar and Sri Sundarar are called as “Devaram”.
• This temple is the “Devara Paadal Petra Sthalam”. Sri Thirugna Sambanthar and Sri Appar praised Sri Abimuktheeswarar in their Devaram hymns. As there are 274 Devara Paadal Sthalam , this is the 209 th Paadal Petra Sthalam. The temples in the nearby places like Thirucherai (“Kadan (Debt) Nivarthi Sthalam”) , Kudavasal , Thalayalankadu, Naalur Mayanam, Aandar Kovil are also “Devara Paadal Petra Sthalam”.
• Bhagawan Sri Maha Vishnu is in a separate shrine in the name “Sri Vaigunda Narayana Perumal” with his consorts Sri Devi and Sri Poo Devi.
• In Vedhik Astrology, certain positions of Planet “Sukra” in the birth chart of some persons, results in “Sukra Dhosha”.
