Kumbakonam - Thirusakthimutram Temple :

This temple is situated at a distance of about 8 Kms from Kumbakonam. This is close to the Patteeswaram Temple as well. Presiding Deity Shiva is depicted as “Sri.Sakthi vaneswarar orSri. Sakthi Thazhuviya Udayar” and Mother Parvathi, his consort is depicted as “ Periyanayaki” .

This temple was part of the Chola Kingdom “ Pazhayari” consisting of several villages and places . The Great Chola Queen “ Chembian Madevi” built this temple and it was renovated later by Raja Raja Chola (I).

The legend has it that Goddess.Parvathi wanted to prove her Bhakthi(Devotion) to Lord. Siva and did a severe penace in this place as per the God’s advice.

The Lord.wanted to test her resolve further and appeared before her as a huge form of FIRE – “Jyotiswaroopa”. The Goddess knowing that this is none other than her husband Siva, she embraced and kissed him immediately. Hence this place came to be known as “Sakthi Mutham” and changed over a period of time to Sakthimutram.

Significance of Kumbakonam - Thirusakthimutram Temple :

Lord Shiva is Swayambu Moorthy, a self-manifested God
This temple is one of the 276 ‘” Thevara padal Petra Sthalams”. One can find it glorified in this ancient sacred Tamil Hymne.
Lord had offered a Pearl tent to his ardent devotee Thirugnana Sambandhar who was on his way to the nearby Patteeswaram Temple just to protect him from the scorching sun during the peak summer .
There are two shrines of the Goddess here and Navagrahams are not present in this temple.
This is also a parihara kshethram for marriage and child boon “Santhana Prapthi”

The puja will be performed on the scheduled date either in the morning or in the evening as per the head priest's sole discretion based on other festivals and programs conducted in the temple.
