About Vaduvoor - Sri Kothanda Ramar Temple :

  • This temple is situated in Tamil Nadu Thiruvarur District, Vaduvoor alias Vaduvur village.
  • Vaduvoor village is located in Thanjavur – Mannargudi route.
  • This place is about twenty five Kilo Meters away from Thanjavur town and it can be reached from Mannargudi also.
  • Vaduvoor is situated around 17 Kilo Meters from Mannargudi.
  • Nearest Railway station is Thanjavur.

Vaduvoor - Sri Kothanda Ramar Temple History :

  • This temple was build by the Maratha Dynasty, when they were rulling the Thanjavur Province.
  • These deities present in this temple Sri Kothanda Ramar , Sri Seetha Devi , Sri Lakshmana and Sri Anjaneya were found under a mango tree from a village called Thalainayar alias Thalaignayiru near Thiruthuraipoondi town.
  • Sri Ramachandra Moorthi revealed his location and identity to Maratha King Sarabhoji’s dream and directed the king to build a temple for him, to install those statues.
  • With the blessings of Sri Ramachandra Moorthi, the Maratha King rushed to Thalainayar with his flock and identified the statues of Lord Sri Rama Chandra Moorthi, Sri Seetha Devi , Sri Lakshmana and Sri Anjaneya.
  • The Maratha Maharaja and his associates were carrying the idols of deities towards Thanjavur as a procession. On the way to Thanjavur they were on rest at this place Vaduvoor.
  • The people of Vaduvoor appealed to the King to install the statues of the unearthed deities in Sri Raja Gopala Swamy temple in their village.
  • Initially the King refused to do so and later he agreed to establish those statues at Sri Raja Goplala Swamy temple of Vaduvoor.
  • As per the legend, Sri Rama Chandra Moorthi stayed here for a while on the way back to Ayothya after the victory in the battle against the demon Ravana. At that time Sages(“Maharishis” ) of this place insisted Sri Rama to stay here for some more time.
  • Since Sri Rama had to go to Ayothya for his “Pattabishegam” (Coronation Ceremony ), he made a marvellous idol of his own image and presented it to the sages. After that Sri Rama continued his journey to Ayothya.

Significance of Vaduvoor - Sri Kothanda Ramar Temple Temple :

  • There are so many mango trees at this village Vaduvoor. Mango trees at this place yield mangos at least eight months in a year. “Maa Vadu” means baby mango. That is the reason why this place is called as “Vaduvoor”.
  • The beautiful village Vaduvoor is surrounded by greenery and water reservoirs.
  • Sri Kothanda Ramar temple is located near the bank of a big lake. This lake is a big one and protected bird’s sanctuary also. One can find so many different birds from foreign countries, in the season times at this bird’s sanctuary.
  • This place was also refered with its old names “Thakshina Ayothiya”, “Vagularanya Shethram” and “Bhaskara Shethram”. It is also one of the Abimana Diviyadesam.
  • This temple “Sri Kothanda Ramar Kovil” is considered as one of the “Pancha Ramar Shethram”.
  • The five significant temples of Sri Rama, located around this place are called as “Pancha Ramar Shethram”.

  • In this temple in a separate shrine the presiding deity “Sri Kothanda Ramar” is in the standing position, “ Sri Seetha Devi” appear on his right side and “Sri Lakshmana” is in the left side of Sri Rama. Sri Anjaneyar also appear next to Sri Lakshmana here.
  • Sri Rajagopala Swamy with his consorts Sri Rukmani and Sri Sathya Bama are also present in the separate shrine as significant as Sri Kothanda Ramar of this temple.
  • Brahmotsavam festivel is being celebrated here as a ten days function starting , no moon day (Ammavasya Day) to Rama Navami (Birth Day of Sri Rama) in the Tamil month Panguni. On the Chathurthi thithi ( Seventh day) procession of the deity Garuda Azhwar (“Garuda Seva”) is being performed. On Rama Navami day car festivel (“Theroottam”) is being performed in a grand manner.
  • In the month of Chithirai “Akshaya Thirithithai” day special poojas are being performed to Sri Kothanda Ramar and all the other deities. In the month of Margazhi “Adyayana Urchavam” is being performed.
  • In the month of Purattasi “Navarathiri Days” are also significant and poojas are being performed to all the deities.
