About Paruthiyur - Sri Kothanda Ramar Temple :

  • This temple is situated in Tamil Nadu Thiruvarur District, Paruthiyur village of Kudavasal Taluk.
  • Paruthiyur village is located in Thiruvarur - Kumbakonam route.
  • This place is about twenty five Kilo Meters away from Thiruvarur town and it can be reached from Kumbakonam also.
  • Paruthiyur is situated in the same distance (twenty five Kilo Meters) from Kumbakonam.
  • Nearest Railway station is Nannilam.

Paruthiyur - Sri Kothanda Ramar Temple History :

  • This temple’s deity Lord Shiva called here as Sri Viswanathar, worshipped by the Sun (“Suriya Bhagawan”) to get rid of from the dhosha of the Raghu Bhagawan. This is the reason why this village is called as “Paruthiyur”. The Sun is called with the name “Paruthi” in Tamil.
  • Sri Aadhi Varatharaja Perumal of this temple is in the furious form. He is in a posture that , he is ready to release his “Chakra” (The weapon of Lord Sri Vishnu holding his hand).
  • To reduce the furious nature of Sri Aadhi Varatha Raja Perumal , Sri Kalyana Varatharaja Perumal and Sri Mahalakshmi Thayar statues were installed in the same shrine.
  • This present temple was build in 1800. Sri Parithiyur Krishna Sasthrigal was a great devotee of Sri Rama Chandra Moorthi. His era was 1842 - 1911. This place was under the control of the Maratha ruler Sarofoji Maharaja II during that period. This temple was called as Sri Varatha Raja Perumal Kovil during that time since Sri Kothanda Ramar and his Parivara Devathas were installed in this temple later period.
  • Sri Parithiyur Krishna Sasthrigal wanted to renovate Sri Varathara Raja Perumal Kovil and install Sri Ramachandra Moorthi , Sri Seetha Devi , Sri Lakshmana and Sri Hanuman statues in that temple.
  • Sri Parithiyur Krishna Sasthrigal started the work of the Pushkarni (“Thiru Kulam”) later named as Sri Kothanda Rama Theertham.
  • At that time of the work, people found the statues of Sri Rama Chandra Moorthi, Sri Seetha Devi, Sri Lakshmana and Sri Hanuman. They unearthed these idols here and installed in this temple.
  • It is strongly believed that these statues belong to the period of the Chola King Sri Raja Rajan I. Since then this temple is called as Sri Kothanda Ramar temple.
  • The latest Mahasamprokshanam (part of consecration ceremony) performed in the year 2016.

Significance of Paruthiyur - Sri Kothanda Ramar Temple :

  • This temple is a “Shiva – Vishnu Aalayam”. Both Saiva and Vaishnava deities, Lord Sri Shiva and Lord Sri Vishnu are present in this temple.
  • Lord Shiva is present in the form of Linga with the name Sri Viswanathar and Lord Vishnu is present in the name of Sri Kothanda Ramar and Sri Varatharajar in this temple.
  • The five significant temples of Sri Rama, located around this place are called as “Pancha Ramar Shethram”.

  • In this temple in a separate shrine the presiding deity “Sri Kothanda Ramar” is in the standing position, “Sri Seetha Devi” and “Sri Anjaneyar” are appear on his right side and “Sri Lakshmana” is in the left side of Sri Rama.
  • Kothandam is the name of Sri Rama’s Bow. Sri Kothanda Ramar , the name indicates that Sri Rama Chandra Moorthi with Bow and Arrow.
  • Sri Varatharaja Perumal is present in this temple in two different names. Sri Aathi Varatharaja Perumal appear as a “Chakra Dhari” (Sri Vishnu with Sudarshana Chakra) in a furious form.
  • Sri Kalyana Varatha Raja Perumal with his consort “Sri Mahalakshmi” are also present in the separate shrine as significant as Sri Kothanda Ramar of this temple.
  • Lord Shiva as Sri Vishwanathar with his consort Sri Visalakshi are also present and shower their blessings in a separate shrine in this temple.
  • Rama Navami (Birth Day of Sri Rama) is being celebrated here as a ten days function. Vaikunda Ekadesi , Sri Krishna Jayanthi and Sri Hanuman Jayanthi days are being celebrated and special poojas are being performed to all the deities.
  • In the month of Purattasi “Navarathiri Days” are also significant and poojas are being performed to all the deities.
  • People pray to Sri Kothanda Ramar of this temple to shine in the field of sangeetham (Music), stage performing and teaching.
