About Arasar Koil - Sundara Mahalakshmi Temple :

  • The temple is in the village of Arasar Koil, which is about 20 kms. from Chengalpattu town, and 82 kms. from Chennai city. The temple is located on the banks of the Palar river.
  • The prime deity is Lord Kamala Varadharajar Perumal, a form of Lord Vishnu. His consort is Goddess Sundara Mahalakshmi, the root form of Goddess Mahalakshmi, the mother Goddess for the 64 forms of Lakshmi Devis.

Arasar Koil - Sundara Mahalakshmi Temple :

  • Arasar Koil is that part of the Thondaimandalam region which is fed by the river Palar. This region had many cities, towns and villages, the best known being Kanchipuram. Many of these places had ancient temples. One of them is the Sri Kamala Varadaraja Perumal temple at Arasar Koil. Goddess Sundara Mahalakshmi is one of the idols of this temple.
  • As per one legend, Lord Brahma performed penance to invoke Lord Narayana. The Lord is said to have appeared here in Arasar Koil along with His consorts Sri Devi and Bhu Devi.
  • As per another legend, when Lord Brahma collected earth from the river Palar to create the sacrificial altar at Kanchipuram, then the idols of Lord Kamala Varadaraja Perumal and his consorts were discovered. Lord Brahma then installed these idols in the Arasar Koil temple and worshipped them.
  • It is thus believed that the temple is older than the Kanchipuram temple.

Significance of Arasar Koil - Sundara Mahalakshmi Temple :

  • The idol of Sri Kamala Varadaraja Perumal is seen with a lotus in the idol’s lower right hand. This is a rare occurrence. The name Kamala comes from this lotus.
  • The idol of Goddess Sundara Mahalakshmi is in a separate shrine which faces east. The idol has four arms. The two upper arms hold two lotuses. The lower right arm has the posture of protecting her devotees. The lower left arm has the posture of providing boons.
  • The idol here represents Aadhi Lakshmi Thayar as she is believed to be the earliest Thayar formed in this world.
  • The idol is unique as it has six toes in the right foot.
  • The tradition here is that Goddess Sundara Mahalakshmi should be worshipped first, and then devotees worship Lord Kamala Varadaraja Perumal.
  • The shrine of the Goddess is designed like a separate temple with a small but beautiful mandapam.
