Thiruvirkudi - Sri Veeratteswarar Temple History :

  • The Demon Jalandrasura got birth from the ocean (“Paar Kadal”). Since he took birth from the water (“Jalam”) he was called as “Jalanthra”.
  • The demon Jalandrasura got so many boons from Lord Sri Bhramma. Because of these boons he felt more stronger.
  • Brindai was the wife of Jalandrasura. She was so genuine to his husband and she consider him as a god.
  • Then Jalendran started distrubing people , sages and saints. He was so cruel and ultimately he dared to oppose Lord Sri Shiva also.
  • Lord Shiva got annoyed with the demon Jalendrasura. There was a heavy battle between Sri Shiva and Demon Jalendrasura.
  • With the help of Lord Sri Vishnu, Lord Sri Shiva won the battle against Jalendrasura. Lord Sri Shiva killed the Demon with a Chakra.
  • When she came to know that Sri Shiva killed Jalandrasura with the help of Lord Vishnu, she cursed Lord Vishnu.
  • Jalandrasura killed by Lord Sri Shiva in this place. This is the reason the presiding deity here called as “Sri Jalanthara Vatha Moorthi”.
  • Lord Sri vishna got rid of from the curse of Brindai , with the blessings of “Sri Jalanthara Vatha Moorthi” of this temple.
  • Brindai turned into a plant called “Tulsi” (Holy Basil) which is the “Thala viruksha” here. The Tulsi plant otherwise called as Brindai.
  • This temple has a history of around 700 years.

  • “Atta Veerattana Sthalam” are the eight places where Lord Shiva showed his courageous presentations.
  • All these are Lord Shiva temples.
  • It is the West facing temple. The presiding deity (“Moolavar”) Sri Veerateeswarar is the “Swayambu Moorthi” (Self made one).
  • The Godess Sri Parimalanayagi alias Sri Elavarkuzhali is in a separate shrine(“Sannithi”) which is a South facing one. Outside of the Sannithi , the twelve Rasi images can be seen on the roof as a sculpture.
  • Sri Thirugnana Sambanthar is one of the “Devara Moovar” (The core devotees of Lord Shiva who praised Lord Sri Shiva with their hymns). This is the 191 st of the “Paadal Petra Sthalam”.
  • The presiding deity Sri Veerateeswarar praised by Sri Thirugnana Sambanthar in his Devaram hymns (“Devara Paadalgal”). The “Devara Padal Petra Sthalam” are categorized as the Shiva temples at the south side of the River Kaveri and the Shiva temples at the North side of the River Kaveri.
  • This is the 74 th “Padal Petra Sthalam” which is at the South side of the Kaveri river.
  • Sri Mahalakshmi , Sri Surya, Sri Chandran , Sri Sanieeswara , Sri Bhairavar, Sri Dakshina Moorthi are also present in this temple. The nine planetary Gods “Navaghraha” are also present in the temple.
  • Goddess “Sri Pidari” and Goddess “ Sri Mari” are Parivara Devathas also present in this temple.
  • Lord Sri Murugha with his consorts Sri Valli and Sri Deivanai is in a separate Sannithi, praised by Sri Arunagirinathar in “Thirupugazh hymans”. Hence this is considered as “Thirupugazh Thalam”.
  • Sri Anjaneyar is also present on the stone pillar in this temple who attracts so many devotees and shower his blessings.
  • People pray here to get rid of from “Pithru Dhosha” which means people suffer because of the planetary positions or the deeds of their ancestors or ones own deeds. This is considered as a “Pithru Dhosha Nivarthi Thalam”.
  • People also pray here to solve the construction related issues. This is the “Vasthu Dhosha Nivarthi Thalam”.
