Thirukkovilur - Sri Veeratteswarar Temple History :
This “Thirukkovilur” was also known as “Thirukkovalur” and “Anthagapuram” in old days. .
One day Shri Shiva and Sri Parvathi Devi were alone. Out of fun Sri Parvathi Devi closed the eyes of Lord Shiva.
Because of this the whole universe turned into dark. “Anthaga” means dark. This darkness turned into a demon called “Anthakasura”.
He worshipped Lord Shiva with his Penance and got many boons. Because of the boons he became stronger. He turned into arrogant and started to disturb the people and Devas (The divine beings).
Ultimately he started to disturb Lord Shiva also. Lord Shiva had a battle with demon Anthakasura.
Lord Shiva lifted demon Anthakasura with his Trident (“Trishul”) and removed his head. When the demon’s blood fell on the earth so many demons came out of the blood.
Lord Shiva had to fight with the army of Demons. Lord Shiva created 64 Bhairava and finly all the demons were destroyed by Lord Shiva and Bhairavas.
Demon Anthakasura destroyed (“Vadham”) by Lord Shiva in this place. This is the reason why this place was called as “Anthagapuram”.
“Naayanmar” (Saints of the era 6 th to 8 th centuries CE) is the term referred for Lord shiva’s devotees. There are “63 Nayanmar” who were the firm devotees of Lord Sri Shiva. One of the Nayanmar called “Mei Porul Nayanar” ruled this province.
It is strongly believed that this is the birth place of the Chola King Sri Rajarajan the First.
