About Chepparai - Natarajar Temple :

  • This temple is situated in Tamil Nadu Thirunelveli District. Chepparai village.
  • Chepparai village is located around 15 Kilo Meters away from Thirunelveli Town.
  • Chepparai village can be reached from Thirunelveli by travelling via Naranam Mallapuram and Rajavallipuram.
  • Nearest Railway station is Thazhaiyuthu.

Chepparai - Natarajar Temple History :

  • This temple is located in the Northern side of the Thamirabarani river.
  • As the legend says the king Ramapandiyan was ruling this province. He was a great devotee of Sri Nataraja. He used to take food only after the dharshan of Sri Nellaiyappar and Sri Gandhimathi Ammai.
  • Everey day he used to visit the temple of Sri Nelliyappar at Thirunelveli from this place. His palace was located in this place Chepparai.
  • One day there was heavy rain. Because of the rain the King was not able to visit Sri Nellaiyappar temple.
  • He felt so unhappy about it . On that day Sri Nelliyappar appeared in the dream of the King, ordered to build a temple to him at this place.
  • In the next day the king started the construction of the temple.
  • In the meantime, near to this place a person was carrying the statue of Lord Sri Nataraja. The person was coming from Chidambaram.
  • He wanted to take rest for a while so he placed the idol on the ground and slept there.
  • After sometime he got up and he could not find Sri Nataraja’s statue which was placed near to him. So he approched the King Ramapandiyan and requested him to find out the statue.
  • The King with his soldiers started searching the statue. In a particular place they heard a sound of somebody dancing with ornaments.
  • There the King found Sri Nataraja’s statue. The King build a temple there for Sri Nellaiyappar and Sri Gandhimathi Ammai. He installed Sri Nataraja’s idol in that temple.
  • This temple is also considered as “Thamira Sabai”.
  • In 1226 A.D the temple was destroyed in a flood in the Thamirabarani river.
  • The present temple was reconstructed by Sri Azhagappa Mudaliyar of Thirunelveli.
  • This temple has a history of about 1000 years.

Significance of Chepparai - Natarajar Temple :

  • The presiding deity Sri Nellaiyappar is in a separate shrine. Sri Nataraja also as significat as the presiding deity Sri Nellaiyappar. Sri Nataraja is called as “Azhagiya Koothar” (Attractive Dancer).
