Thirunageswaram Temple History
Thirunageswaram is a small town located near Kumbakonam town of Thanjavur District.
This is one of the nine Navagraha temples specifically meant for Rahu Bagavan The presiding deity is Lord.Shiva, who is worshiped here as Naganathar.Goddess Parvati,his consort, is depicted as Piraisoodi Amman. This temple is considered as one of the shrines of the 275 Padal Petra Sthalams of Lord Siva.One can find it glorified in the early mythological Tevaram poems written and sung by Thirunavukkarasar and Thirugnana Sambandar of the famed 63 nayanmars.
This temple built on the chola style is a testimony to their architectural capabilities, It’s a real masterpiece that exhibits their architectural style,which dates back to the 10th century AD.
As per the legend, this temple was built by a King named Aditya Chola of the Chola Dynasty. It is a world famous temple for removing all Rahu related dhoshas.
The serpents Adishesha, Takshaka and Karkotaka,were believed to have worshipped Lord.Siva at this place and hence the name "Tirunageswaram". As per Hindu legend, the king of snakes, Adisesha did penance at this place and got boon from Lord Siva and hence he is known as “the Naganathar”. While doing Milk Abishekam to Rahu during Rahu Kal, one could see the white milk changing into Blue in colour.
