Thiruvidaikazhi - Sri Subraminiya Swamy Temple History :

  • The significant deity of this temple is “Sri Subramaniya Swamy”. Sri Subramaniya Swamy won the battle against the Demon King “Soorabadhman”, occurred at Thiruchendur. He killed the demon “Soorabadhman” and all his associates.
  • King Soorabadman’s son “Hirenyasura” ran away from the battle field and got settled at Tharangambadi near Thiruvidaikazhi. He took the form of a fish and hide in the sea near Thrangambadi. He hide here for the purpose of performing the vedic rituals (Pithru Kadan) to his father’s death.
  • Sri Subramaniya Swamy came to know the where about of Hiranyasura, he rushed to Tharangambadi and killed Hiranyasura also.
  • Since Hiranyasura was a devotee of Lord Shiva, Sri Subramaniya Swamy worshiped and performed a Shiv pooja under the Sthala Viruksha “Kura Tree” here to get rid of the Dosha of killing the demon King.
  • Lord shiva appeared after the Shiv Pooja in the name of “Sri Pavanasa Peruman” and blessed Sri Subramanya Swamy . Lord Shiva asked Sri Subramaniya Swamy to stay here.

Significance of Thiruvidaikazhi - Sri Subraminiya Swamy Temple :

  • This temple is refered in the name of “Thirukuravadi”. The “Sthala Viruksha” is Kura (Bottle Brush) tree itself is a significant one. This Kura tree typically seen in the mountain areas only. But this Kura tree flourish in this place with a strange atmosphere when compare to the climate of a hilly area.
  • Saint Sri Arunagirinathar worshipped and praised Lord Subramaniya Swamy in his “Thiruppugazh” hymns as follows,
  • “Thirukuravadi Nizhalthanil Uraivone” which means “The God who stays under the shadow of Kura tree..”
  • There are sixteen statues of Sri Ganapathi mounted in this temple which is also considerd as a significant one.
  • There are no shrines for Goddesses Sri Parvathi and SriValli. There is a separate Shirine for Sri Deivanai only.
  • Since Sri Subramaiyar has the control over, all nine planets , there is no separate “Navagragha Sannathi” in this temple.
