This temple is situated in Thirukkanur Thanjavur District., Tamil Nadu .
Thirukkanur is located on the bank of Kollidam river in Kumbakonam – Mayiladuthurai route near Thirukkandiyur of Thanjavur District.
Thirukkandiyur Sri Veerateswarar temple which is a West facing one. Just opposite to this temple there is a road to reach Thirukkattupalli. On this route one has to go to Vishnampettai and this temple is in a walkable distance from Vishnampettai.

Thirukkanur - Karumbeswarar Temple History :
This temple was buried in the soil when there was a flood in the Kollidam river. After so many years this temple found and unearthed by the local people. This temple was found under a sugarcane plant. Hence the presiding deity called as “Karumbeeswarar”. In Tamil “Senkarumbu” means Sugarcane.
Once Sri Parvathi Devi wanted to do penance towards Bhagawan Sri Shiva. She came to “Boologa” and she selected this place Thirukkanur. Sri Parvathi Devi did her penance for a long time in this place
Bhagawan Sri Shiva was happy and satisfied with the panance of Sri Parvathi Devi and appeared in the form of Fire , gave a Dharshan to Sri Parvathi Devi.
This is the reason why the presiding deity Sri Shiva of this temple is called in the name “Sri Semmeninathar”.
Sri Parasuramar worshipped Bhagawan Sri Shiva in this temple. King Kartha Veeryachuna captured the divine cow “Kamadenu” from Sri Parasuramar.
Sri Parasuramar got annoyed with this action of the king , hence Sri Parasuramar killed Kartha Veeryachuna. Because of this Sri Parasuramar got affected by “Shathiriya Dhosha”.
To get rid of from this Dhosha Sri Parasuramar worshipped Bhagawan Sri Shiva in this temple. Sri Shiva showered his blessings to Sri Parasuramar.
The Chola King “Karikala” lost his father in his childhood itself. Sri Karikala and his mother were hiding and living in this place to protect themself from the enimies.

The presiding deity Sri Semmeninathar, a “Swambu” means a self made one is in the form of Lingam. Every year in the Tamil month Panguni three days, sun rays fall on Sri Semmeninathar. This is called as “Surya Pooja”.
Goddess Sri Sivayoganayagi is in a Separate shrine which is a South facing one. Thayar (“Goddess”) statue is made of “Salakramam” (A Divine kind of stone which is available in the river “Kandagi” in the Mukthinath area of Nepal).
Since Goddess Sri Parvathi devi had a Dharshan of Bhagawan Sri Shiva here, people pray in this temple for good family relationship.
In this Shiva temple all the deities like Sri Ganapathi, Sri Dhakshina Moorthi, Sri Murugha with his consorts Sri Valli and Sri Deivanai are present in this temple.

The puja will be performed on the scheduled date either in the morning or in the evening as per the head priest's sole discretion based on other festivals and programs conducted in the temple.
