  • Nayakhas were the administrative representatives of Vijayanagara Dynasty of 15 th Centuary . They ruled the Madurai , Thanjavur and Gingee region during the era between 16 th and 17 th centuries.
  • This temple was build by the Thanjavur Nayakha Dynasty’s Kings of Sixteenth Century AD.
  • The later Kings of Maratha Dynasty were also contributed a lot for the development of this temple.
  • The Maratha rulers performed a Yagna to remove the British rulers from this province. It is believed that the Yagna performed at this temple and for the purpose of the Yagna , gigantic statues of Shiva Durga and Vishnu Durga were installed here.

Significance of Thanjavur - Sri Rajagopala Swamy Temple :

  • It is a East facing temple with a “Rajagopuram”. The presiding deity Sri Sudarshana is present in the standing posture at the “Karbhagraha” (Moolasthanam) with his consorts.

Those are temples at Kancheepuram Sri Varatharajar Kovil, Thirumogur and Azhagar Kovil (Sri Thirumaliruncholai”) near Madurai, Srirengam near Trichy, Thirukandiyur near Thanjavur and Sri Chakarapani temple at Kumbakonam, Aaduthurai Sri Jagathratchaga Perumal Kovil.

  • Sri Shivendra is also so significant in this temple. Sri Shivendra is the rare kind of god present in this temple who is another form of Lord Siva worshiped by the Maratha rulers of this province.
  • Sri Shivendhra is present with his consorts Sri Parvathi Devi and Sri Ganga Devi. A total of eight Sri Shivendra idols are present in the same shrine with his consorts.
  • These statues are different in sizes. Out of these eight Statues , two statues are large is volume.
  • In another shrine Lord Sri Ganesh , Sri Murugha and Sri Hanuman are also present. All these ststues are big in size with a height of around Seven feets.
