Thirukkandiyur - Sri Veeratteswarar Temple History :

  • Lord Shiva has five faces named Eesanam, Sathpurusham, Akoram, Vamathevam and Sathyojatham.
  • In those days Lord Sri Bhramma was also having five faces. Because of this Sri Bhramma thought himself equal to Lord Sri Shiva and he was so arrogant about this.
  • Sri Parvathi Devi annoyed about the behaviour of Sri Bhramma. She complained about it to Lord Sri Shiva.
  • Lord Shiva removed one of the heads of Sri Bhramma with his hands. This happened in this Sthalam (“Place”).
  • Because of this Sri Shiva got affected by “Bhrammahatthi Dhosha”. The removed head of Sri Bhramma stuck in the hand of Sri Shiva.
  • As per the legend this Dhosha extincted by the blessings of Lord Vishnu called here as “Sri Harasaba Vimosana Perumal”.
  • In old days this place was called as “Aathi Vilvaranyam” because of Lord Shiva gave a “Dharshan” here to Saint Sathathabar.
  • It is believed that Dhronacharya worshipped lord Shiva here and blessed with a child.
  • This temple has a history of more than 1000 years.

  • Lord Bhramma and his consort Sri Saraswathi also present in a separate shrine in this Shiva temple near to the Moolasthanam.
  • There is a separate shrine for Thayar (“Mother”) Sri Mangalanayagi in this temple. It is located just near to the entrance of this temple.
  • One could worship the “Mummoorthis” (Three Gods) of Hindu deities - Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Bhramma in this place.
  • This place is also called as “Mummoorthi Thalam”.
  • Sri Subramaniyar with his consorts Sri Valli and Sri Deivanai , is in a shrine. Saint Sri Arunagirinathar praized this Sri Subramaniyar in his “Thirupugazh” hymns.
  • Sri Thirugnanasambanthar and Sri Thirunavukkarasar also praised Lord Sri Verrattaneswarar in their “Devaram” Hymns. Thats why this temple is called as a “Devara Paadal Petra Thalam”( praised temple in the hymns of “Devaram”).
  • Sri Mahalakshmi , Sri Natarajar , Sri Arthanareeswarar are also present in this temple.
  • Goddess Sri Saraswathi worshipped for her consort Sri Bhramma in this temple.
