  • The temple is in the town of Arani, which is about 38 kms. from Vellore town, 61 kms. from Kanchipuram town, 64 kms. from Tiruvannamalai town, and 140 kms. from Chennai city.
  • The temple is on the banks of the Kamandala river, which is a tributary of the Cheyyar river.
  • The prime deity of the temple is Lord Puthrakameshtiswarar, a form of Lord Shiva.

Arani - Sri Puthrakameshti Easwarar History :

  • King Dasharatha of the Ramayana epic is said to have installed a Shiva Linga at the temple spot, and performed a yagna, under the guidance of sage Rishyashringa, to beget male children.
  • The Lord of Fire, Agni, is said to have emerged from the yagna’s fire, and to have given a bowl of divine prasadam to Lord Dasharatha, who then gave it to his wives, resulting in the birth of Lord Rama, and his brothers.
  • The original temple was believed to have been built by King.Harichandra who worshipped Lord.Siva from this hillock and built a temple in this place. Later on, the Pandya Kings built a rock cut temple in 8th century. The Nayaks who ruled Madurai later added mandapams and gopurams. This rock cut temple is an Architecture Marvel.
  • The presiding deity Lord.Siva is depicted as “ Parangirinathar” and mother Parvathi is depicted as “ Avudainayagi”
