About Sirkazhi - Sirkazhi - Nageswaram Udayar Temple :

  • This temple is situated in Sirapuram near Sirkazhi of Nagapattinam District., Tamil Nadu .
  • The village Sirapuram is situated near Sirkazhi – Chidambaram road.
  • Sirapuram is the place located very near to the Sirkazhi town and it is around 70 Kilo Meters away from Nagapattinam.
  • The nearby temple towns are Chidambaram, Mayiladuthurai , Thiru Naangur , Vaitheeswaran Kovil and Thiruvenkadu.
  • Nearest Railway station is Sirkazhi.

Sirkazhi - Sirkazhi - Nageswaram Udayar Temple History :

  • The present temple was build by the Kings of Chola monarchy. This place was called as “ Sirapuram”, Bhrammapuram, Venupuram, Thonipuram, Kazhumalam, Kalipuram , Poonthaarai in anciant days.
  • The history of this temple is the same of the temple “ Sri Aadhi Yoga Kethu Bhagawan” at Semmangudi near Sirkazhi.
  • Once there was a battle between “Devas” (The Divine People) and “Rakshas” (Demons) to get the Nectar (“Amirtha”) got by churn the “Parkadal” (Ocean of Milk) where Bhagawan Sri Vishnu resides.
  • Bhagawan Sri Vishnu took the form of Mohini Avathar to divert Demons and started the distribution of nectar to Devas.
  • One Demon called “Swarnabhanu” suspected that Demons may not get nectar, took a form of Deva. He got into the crowed of Deva and ultimately got the Nectar from Mohini and ate it.
  • Sri Surya Bhagawan and Sri Chandra Bhagawan came to know this and informed it to Sri Vishnu Bhagawan.
  • Sri Vishnu Bhagawan got annoyed and strike on the head of Swarnabhanu with the ladle. The body of the “Swarnabhanu” divided into two parts, one from head to chest and another part was chest to leg. Since Swanrnabhanu ate the Nectar (“Amirtha”) , both the parts were alive.
  • As per the legend the head to chest part called Raghu fell on this place called “Sirapuram” (Siram means head in Tamil”) near Sirkazhi and another part chest to leg called Kethu fell on the place called “Semmangudi” , a place located around five Kilo Meters from Sirkazhi.
  • Both Raghu and Kethu with their penance towards Sri Maha Vishnu, got the planetary positions in the “Navaghraha”. Raghu and Kethu move from on house to another house in the anti clock wise direction while all the other planets move in the clock wise direction.
  • Sri Raghu Bhagawan has a human head and body of a snake. Sri Rahu Bhagawan’s Natshathras are Thiruvathirai, Swathi and Sathayam.
  • This temple has a history of more than thousand years.

Significance of Sirkazhi - Nageswaram Udayar Temple :

  • This temple is facing the East direction with a three phased Rajakopuram (Tower at the Entrance of the temple). The presiding deity (“Moolavar”) of this temple Sri Nageswaramudaiyar is also facing East from his shrine.
  • Goddess Sri Pon Nagavalli Thayar is situated in a separate South facing shrine. One could worship both “Bhagawan” and “Ambal” at the same time by standing outside of the presiding deity Sri Nageswaramudaiyar Shrine.
  • As like Semmangudi Aadhi Yoga Kethu Bhagawan temple this temple is also a “Devara Paadal Petra Vaippu Sthalam”. Sri Appar Peruman praised about this sthalam in his other Devaram hymns of other temples.
  • Sri Manikka Vinayagar , Sri Ganapathi , Sri Bhairavar, Sri Surya , Sri Chandeekeswara , Sri Murugha with his consorts Sri Valli and Sri Deivanai are also present in this temple.
  • Sri Sani Bhagawan present in a separate shrine with his consort. The significance is Sri Raghu Bhagawan is also present inthe same shrine. Sri Kethu Bhagawan also present in a separate shrine.
  • Sri Navagraha and Goddess Sri Dhurga are not present in this temple.
  • In vedic astrology, in a birth chart of a person, planets Sri Kethu’s and Sri Raghu’s certain positions are considered as Dhosha. Those are called as “Naga Dhosha” , “Kala Sarbha Dhosha”. This temple is the “Parakara Sthalam” for these kind of Dhosha.
  • People have these Dhosha in their birth chart pray to the main deity Sri Naganathar and Sri Aadhi Raghu Bhagawan to get rid of from their Dhosha. “Sri Raghu” Bhagawan housed in a separate “Sannithi” (Shrine).
  • Every Sunday evening time between 4.30 PM to 6.00 PM is the “Raghu Kalam”, considered as time for special pooja to Sri Raghu Bhagawan.
  • It is strongly believed that people attend the Raghu Kala pooja continuously for 11 weeks , will get rid of from the evil effects of “Raghu Dhosha”, “Kaala Sarbha Dhosha” and “Naga Dhosha”.
  • The “Raghu Kalam” time of the weekly days also as follows:
    • Monday 7.30 AM to 9.00
    • Tuesday 3.00 PM to 4.30 PM
    • Wednesday 12.00 PM to 1.30 PM
    • Thursday 1.30 PM to 3.00 PM
    • Friday 10.30 AM to 12.00 PM
    • Saturday 9.00 AM to 10.30 AM.
    • Sunday 4:30 PM to 6.00 PM.
  • The above Raghu Kalam timings are auspicious times to worship Sri Aadhi Raghu Bhagawan.
  • Chant the following Sri raghu Bhagawan Gayathri Manthra to get the blessings of Sri Raghu Bhagawan:
    • “Naga Thvajaaya Vidhyamahe
    • Padma Hasthaaya Theemahi
    • Thanno Raghu Prachothayathu”
