  • This Temple is situated in Tamil Nadu Thiruvannamalai District.
  • Situated at the base of the Arunachala hill in the town of Thiruvannamalai.

Thiruvannamalai - Sri Arunachaleswara Temple History :

  • Lord Shiva gave a dharshan, in the form of fire to Sri Thirumal and Sri Bhramma here. They both failed to see the starting and ending point of the fire image. This temple is considered as agni (fire) sthalam.
  • Those five essentials, which steer the living things are water, fire, wind , sky and earth. Five shiva temples of Tamil Nadu, are signifying these forces. Thiruvannamalai – fire( Neruppu), Thiruvanaikaval – Water (Neer) , Thirukalahasthi – wind ( Kattru), Chidambaram – Sky (Agayam) , Thiruvarur – Earth (Boomi). These temples are called as “Pancha Bootha Sthalam”.
  • Once Goddess Umadevi (Parvathi) closed the eyes of Lord Shiva out of fun. Because of this play the whole universe turned into dark. This disturbed all living things. To get rid of from this sin , Goddess parvathi worshipped Lord Shiva in Thiruvanannamai.
  • This temple tower is the second tallest one, among temples in South India with a height of 217 feet.
  • This temple refurbished by chera , Chola , Pandiya and other Kings , during their ruling era.
  • This is the birth place of the great Saint Arunagirinathar. Lord Sri Muruga gave a dharshan to Sri Arunagirinathar and blessed him to write the marvellous Tamil writeup “Thirupugazh”.
  • Tamil poets and scholars, Thirugnana Sambanthar , Thirunavukkarasar alias Appar, Sundaramoorthinayanar alias Sundarar are called as “Devara Moovar”. They visited and presented poems (hymns) on Lord Shiva of various temples . These hymns are called as “Devara Pathigam”and Shiva temples they visited and offered pathigam are called as “Paadal Petra Sthalam”. There are 274 Devara Padal Petra Sthalam and Thiruvannamalai is the 233 rd sthalam.
  • This temple is a combination of nine towers (kopuram), six prakaram, total one hundred and forty two shrines which includes twenty two Ganapathi Shrines, three hundred and six halls and a thousand column hall (Ayiram kal Mandabam). This temple spread over an area of 11,76,120 Square feets.

Significance of Thiruvannamalai - Sri Arunachaleswara Temple :

  • The Thiruvanannmalai temple is located at the bottom of the Arunachala Hill. Here the hill itself condidered as Lord Shiva. Thiruvannamalai is referred as the capital of “Saivam”..

  • Thiruvannamalai is the land of Saints (Siddha Boomi). Ramana Maharishi, Virupatchi Devar, Esanya Gnathesikar, Gugai Namachivayar, Guru Namachvayar, Idaikkattu Siddhar and so many saints lived here.
  • Sri Sambantha Vinayagar of this temple is reddish in color. Muthammai Vinayagar of this temple was worshipped by Saint Arunagirinather’s mother Muthammai. There is a separate shrine for Sri Chithragupta and Sri Vchithragupta.
  • Lord Shiva of Thiruvannamalai worshipped by Sri Devendran, Sri Eman, Sri Varunan, Sri Guberan, Sri Vayu, Sri Agni, Sri Esanan, Sri Niruthi respectively Indhra linga, Ema linga, Varunalinga, Gubera linga,vayu linga, Agni linga, Esana linga and Niruthi linga. These eight Linga statues called in the name of Ashta Linga and each sited in eight directions of the Arunachala Hill.
  • Girivalam is a noteworthy practice by the devotees here. There is a 14 KM circular road around the Arunachala Hill. Devotees walk around this road in the full moon days. “Giri” means Mountain and “valam” means making a round trip by walk. One who do this “Girivalam” practice will get good mental and physical health, since this mountain is filled with so many medicinal value plants.
  • Festivel of lights “Karthigai Deepam” is celebrated in this sthalam in a grand manner.In the evening around 6 o clock, on the full moon day of Tamil month Karthigai , lighting of Karthigai deepam called as “Thiruvananmalai Deepam” can be seen on top of this hill.The height of the hill is 2668 feet. Lakhs of devotees witness this lighting every year here.
