About Mudikondan - Sri Kothanda Ramar Temple :

  • This temple is situated in Tamil Nadu Thiruvarur District, Mudikondan village. .
  • Mudikondan village is located in Thiruvarur – Mayiladuthurai route..
  • This place is about fifteen Kilo Meters away from Thiruvarur town and it can be reached from Mayiladuthurai also.
  • Mudikondan is situated around twenty Kilo Meters from Mayiladuthurai.
  • Nearest Railway station is Nannilam.

Mudikondan - Sri Kothanda Ramar Temple History :

  • As per the legend, in this kshethram Sri Ramachandra Moorthi emerged before Sri Bharathwaja Maharishi, in the form of “Pattabishega Thiru Kolam”(Coronation Posture) with a crown on his head.
  • This crown is refered in Tamil “Mani Mudi”. This is the reason why this place is refered as “Mudi Kondan” means Sri Rama with a crown.
  • Sri Ramachandra Moorthi revealed his location and identity to Maratha King Sarabhoji’s dream and directed the king to build a temple for him, to install those statues.
  • Bharathwaja Maharishi was staying in his ashram here. Sri Rama Chandra Moorthi met the Maharishi here when he was on the way to Sri Lanka to rescue Sri Seetha Devi.
  • Sri Rama stayed here for a short time and Sri Bharathwaja Maharishi insisted Sri Rama to stay here for some more time and requested to accept a feast.
  • Sri Ramachandra Moorthi assured that while return back to Ayothya sure he will stay here and accept the feast. Sri Rama continued his journey to Sri Lanka.
  • As per his assurance, Sri Rama Chandra Moorthi stayed here with Sri Seetha Devi and Sri Lakshmana, for a short time on the return journey to Ayothya after the victory in the battle against the demon Ravana.
  • During the stay here Sri Rama Chandra Moorthi appeared before (gave a “Dharshan”) Sri Bharathwaja Maharishi in the form of “Pattabishega Thiru Kolam”(Coronation Posture) with a crown on his head and accepted Maharishi’s feast.
  • Sri Anjaneya is present in a separate shrine outside of the “Kharbhagraha”(Main shrine). The legend says that Sri Ramachandra Moorthi asked Sri Hanuman to go to Nandhigram to meet Sri Bharatha and inform about his arrival to Ayothya.
  • Sri Hanuman met and informed to Sri Bharatha at Nandhigram. Sri Hanuman reached back to this place in a little bit late.
  • Since Sri Rama had to go to Ayothya for his “Pattabishegam” he was in a hurry. Sri Rama gave dharshan to Mahararishi and accepted the feast before the arrival of Sri Anjaneya.
  • Because of this Sri Anjaneya decided to stay outside the “Moola Sthanam” and shower his blessings to devotees from a separate shrine in this temple.
  • This present temple was build by Chola Kings.

Significance of Mudikondan - Sri Kothanda Ramar Temple Temple :

  • This place was also refered with its old name “Magudavarthana Puri”.
  • This temple “Sri Kothanda Ramar Kovil” is considered as one of the “Pancha Ramar Shethram”..
  • The five significant temples of Sri Rama, located around this place are called as “Pancha Ramar Shethram”.

  • In this temple in a separate shrine the presiding deity “Sri Kothanda Ramar” is in the standing position, “Sri Seetha Devi” appear on his right side and “Sri Lakshmana” is in the left side of Sri Rama.
  • Sri Kothanda Ramar of this temple is in the standing position with a bow in the left hand and arrow in the right hand. Kothandam is the name of Sri Rama’s Bow. Sri Kothanda Ramar , the name indicates that Sri Rama Chandra Moorthi with Bow and Arrow.
  • Sri Anjaneyar is appear in a separate shrine outside of the Moolasthanam (Kharbhagraha).
  • Sri Renganathar with his consorts “Sri Devi” and “Sri Poodevi” are also present in the separate shrine as significant as Sri Kothanda Ramar of this temple.
  • Rama Navami (Birth Day of Sri Rama) is being celebrated here as a ten days function. On Rama Navami day “Seetha Kalyana Urchavam” (Marriage function of Lord Rama and Sri Seetha Devi) is being performed in a grand manner.
  • Vaikunda Ekadesi and on the Punar Poosam star (Birth star of Sri Rama) day are being celebrated and special poojas are being performed to all the deities.
  • On the “Ekathesi Thithi” (the eleventh day after no moon day and eleventh day after full moon day) Thirumanjana pooja is being performed to Sri Renganathar of this temple.
  • In the Tamil month Masi “Magam” star day, Panguni “Utthiram” star day, Kirthigai star day and every Satur day are considered as significant days. People assemble and worship all the deities here on these days.
  • In the month of Purattasi “Navarathiri Days” are also significant and poojas are being performed to all the deities.
