  • This Temple is situated in Tamil Nadu Thiruvarur District, Adambar village.
  • Adambar village is located in the Nannilam – Eravancherry route..
  • This place is about eight Kilo Meters away from Nannilam town and it can be reached via Achuthamangalam.
  • This village Nannilam can be reached from nearby towns like Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Karaikkal, Kumbakonam and Mayiladuthurai..
  • Nannilam is located in the Thiruvarur – Mayiladuthurai Rail route. Nearest Railway station is Nannilam.

Adambar - Sri Kothanda Ramar Temple History :

  • Sri Ramachandra Moorthi was in the exile at the forest (“Vana Vas”) with his consort Sri Seetha Devi and his Brother Sri Lakshmana.
  • The demon King Ravana wanted to abduct Sri Seetha Lakshmi. He sought the help of demon “Mareesa” for this.
  • The demon Mareesa changed his figure as a “Golden Deer” and appeared in front of Sri Seetha devi.
  • Sri Seetha Devi impressed by the beauty of the Golden Deer, asked Sri Rama to capture that deer.
  • Sri Rama refused to capture the deer and he was suspecting a maneuver with that deer but later to fulfil his wife’s wish he rushed to capture the deer with his Bow and Arrows.
  • Sri Rama chased the Golden Deer for some time but he could not capture the Deer. Ultimately he understood that it was the demon and he decided to kill that Deer.
  • Sri Rama said “Tham hanthum Kirutha Nichchaya Hatham Bar” means sure I will kill you Deer. This saying is the reason for the village is called as “Adambar”.
  • It is believed that Sri Rama shot the arrow on the “Golden Deer” from this place with the above statement.
  • The names of nearby places to Adambar like “Manthai”, Kollumangudi, “Nallamangudi” and “Valangaiman”, are also connected to this event. The Tamil word “Mann” means Deer.
  • This temple belongs to the 17 th Century.

Significance of Adambar - Sri Kothanda Ramar Temple Temple :

  • There are so many temples for Sri Ramachandra Moorthi on the banks of the river Kaveri. This temple is also one of the “Sri Rama Shethram” (Temple for Sri Rama) on the bank of river Kaveri.
  • This temple “Sri Kothanda Ramar Kovil” is considered as one of the “Pancha Ramar Shethram”.
  • The five significant temples of Sri Rama, located around this place are called as “Pancha Ramar Shethram”.

  • In this temple all the deities “Sri Kothanda Ramar” , “ Sri Seetha Devi” and “Sri Lakshmana” are in one Peedam( Altar) in a separate shrine. A statue of Deer ( “Mareesa Maan”) also there in Sri Rama’s shrine. Sri Anjaneyar also here, near to Sri Rama in this shrine.
  • Sri Anjaneyar is in a humble posture as like he is in the Thillai Vilagam Sri Veera Kothanda Ramar temple and it looks like that he is always ready to accept and execute the order of Sri Kothanda Ramar instantaneously. This kind of posture is called as “Sri Rama Dasa Hanuman”.
  • Sri Rama is in the standing posture with a bow in the left hand and arrow in the right hand. Kothanda Ramar , the name indicates that Sri Rama Chandra Moorthi with Bow and Arrow.
  • Moolavar (“Main Deity”) Sri Renganathar with his consorts Sri Devi and Poo Devi are also present in the Main shrine (“Garbhagriha”) as significant as Sri Kothanda Ramar of this temple. Lord Sri Raja Gopala Swamy with his consorts Sri Bama and Sri Rukmani also present in the Garbhagriha.
  • Sri Rama navami (Sri Rama’s Birth day), Sri Hanuman Jeyanthi, Vaikunda Ekadesi and Navarathiri days are considered as significant days here. Special pooja are being performed on these days to Sri Kothanda Ramar and other deities of this temple.
  • The Maha Samprokshnam (part of consecration ceremony) perfomed in the year 2002.
  • Chant the following Sri Rama Manthra to get Sahala Aiswaryam:
    • Ramaya Ramabathraya Ramachandraya Vethase
    • Raghunaathaya Naathaaya seethaya pathaye Nama
