  • The temples in “Porul vaitha Cherry” (now called as Poravacherry), Enkan and Ettukudi are closely associated with one another because of Lord Muruga’s idols of these temples are made by the same sculptor.
  • Once a sculptor named “Sipla Sirpi” lived in this place. A great devotee of Lord Murugha, always he was chanting Sri Murugha’s name.
  • With the blessings of Lord Murugha “Silpa Sirpi” the sculptor, sculpted a statue of Sri Murugha. This idol of Sri Murugha is in a sitting posture on a peacock, with his six faces( Arumugam) and twelve hands. Such a marvellous art of its kind, one could find nails and veins of Sri Murugha , in this statue.
  • The Chola King “Mutharasa Cholan” of that province removed thumbs of “Silpa Sirpi” with a thought that he should not craft another statue like this in some other temple. The king wanted that the statue should be a unique one.
  • But after some days “Silpa Sirpi” moved to a nearby village called “Ettukudi”. With the blessings of Sri Murugha , Sirpi made a same kind of statue in Ettukudi temple also. It is belived that when the sculptor was about to finish Lord Muruga’s statue here , the peacock was started to fly. The ruler shouted that “etti pidi” (catch it). Hence this Temple is called as “Ettukudi”.
  • At the time of finishing , bright rays came of the statue and because of that “Silpa Sirpi” last his eye sight.
  • Then “Silpa” moved to another village called “Enkan”. He made another statue of Sri Murugha , without eye sight and thumbs, with the blessings of Sri Murugha. He could achieve this since Lord Murugha’s image was always in his mind.
  • It is believed that the “Silpa Sirpi” got back his vision and thumbs , after the completion of Sri Murugha’s statue at “Enkan” temple.
  • All these three idols are look like same in appearance. Lord Muruga is sitting on the peacock with his six faces and twelve hands. The total weight of Sri Murugha and the peacock , is rest in peacock’s two legs.
