Marundeeswarar Temple History :

This ancient Siva Temple is located in Thiruvanmiyur area of Chennai in ECR Road. The presiding deity Lord.Siva is depicted as “ Marundeeswarar” and his consort goddess Parvathi is depicted as “ Thiripura Sundari” .

Lord Siva taught Agasthya, the great Sage, about the science of medicinal herb to cure diseases and hence this name to Lord. “Marundhu” in Tamil means “Medicine “and “Eshwarar” in Tamil means “Lord Siva” .

This very ancient temple is believed to have been built in the 7th century.. All vedas, devas, Great Saints worshipped here.

Significance of Marundeeswarar Temple :

  • This temple is considered one of the shrines of the 275 Padal Petra Sthalams of Lord Siva. One can find it glorified in the early mythological Tevaram poems written and sung by many of the famed 63 nayanmars.
  • Lord.Siva faces West in this temple as he turned his face west for giving dharshan to his devotee Appaya Dikshithar as Appaya Dikshithar was not able to see the face of the Lord, during floods. All other deities faces East except Lord Siva who faces West in this Temple.
  • The Lord here is Swayambu Lingam (self manifested) and will be white in colour as Kamadhenu, the divine cow used to pour milk daily to get relief from a curse and regained its supremacy.
